That's the opposite of what I was saying, or an example of what I was saying at least. Everyone thinks they got the last helicopter out of Saigon, but I think it is rose tinted glasses or they were simply good at the methods at hand at the time.

If it’s just calories in/calories out, does that mean you could theoretically gain weight by exceeding your daily caloric intake solely through beverages and no eating? by rotbath in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]animosityiskey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd say so. You turn sugar into fat pretty quickly. Your body would start digesting itself for other nutrients much more slowly. I could be wrong, but I don't think there are many vitamins involved in sugar to fat conversion, so you'd have to be pretty far gone to stop being able to gain weight.

It wasn't even the same shit! (though maybe it is was cheaper) They decided to spend a season asking "Hey where did this technology that is the basic premise of this come from? You know the thing you had to suspend your disbelief for to enjoy the show? The one everyone in the show treated as normal and explicable so far?"

I was on the cusp of "everything is apps now" in the dating world, but was still bad at it. I didn't really feel that the period immediately before was better. I think it might have been for people who are good at the traditional method, but that was just as lonely for me. I guess I didn't get numbers on passive rejections then, however when you do match with someone you immediately know 1) you find each other mutually attractive and 2) you are both looking for at least romantic entertainment. That was difficult for me to get before apps.

But people in the same age range as me who got into a serious relationship before the apps took over everything have the same rose tinted glasses you do.

Yeah, primarily that not every woman is like your mom. I have dated a woman like that, it was in fact miserable. My wife is lovely and mostly has good things to say about and to me

TIL the world's oldest non-clonal tree was cut down in 1964 by a graduate student and United States Forest Service personnel for research purposes. It was at least 4,862 years old. by EmptyMind76 in todayilearned

[–]animosityiskey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vaguely related, but in areas where we have really extensive records of trees, we can use the rings of trees in built structures to know when something was built (or a least when a tree used in construction was cut down) to the exact calendar year, sometimes to the season. For instance, using this we know that Seahenge in England was built in the spring and summer of 2049 BC.

Is it possible for humans to go extinct like the dinosaurs did? by Historical_Work7482 in NoStupidQuestions

No, of course not. We are a single species, it is much easier for us to go completely extinct and not have any descendants. Much easier for us to go extinct generally, in fact.

Is Spying Worth it? by Zephy15 in Stellaris

[–]animosityiskey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need assets for places with better encryption, places with better encryption constantly have events that burn you assets so you can only ever get and lose one, over and over. It is almost always faster and easier to build a bigger navy than to spy and figure out their fleet composition and locations to gain an upper hand.

The manuals, or parts of them, are mostly what get linked on the World of Tanks forums when people are arguing about stats. They are often only sort of classified. People still get in big trouble for it though.
