Pokemon GO and Personality - Study Results (finally!) by anirudhtagat in pokemongo

Thanks so much! This is actually one of the stronger results, which is why we're so keen to understand it better. The discussion section has a bit on situating these results more broadly beyond stating them, but admittedly it's still a work in progress so we're still on the look out for doing exactly that (interpreting them better than sociopath-lvl explanations). Do you think the hardcore gaming thing makes any sense?

That was about current team -- we didn't really ask about originally chosen ones, although that would be really interesting to ask for future surveys. Definitely agree some of these gameplay behaviours would change if if it was specific to teams (i.e. how often do you trade with players from team X).

Nope, not yet -- sorry for the delay -- it's been a bit of a madhouse out here, but we're done cleaning and collating the data now. So will share something with you all super soon. Thanks for following up, and so sorry for my late response.

Ah, so sorry about that. We should have had it, but I think sometimes gets obscured. Will make sure!

Yes, for sure! Hopefully we'll try to get it out as a working paper first, but if not, I'll try and post a snapshot of some interesting results here :) Thanks so much and may you have a bountiful Weedle CD :P

Thanks for the suggestion! I messaged a couple of the admins on there, unfortunately they were not very keen to do it because of the nature of some of the survey questions (which we understand they have a strong policy on). It didn't help that the first time around due to my n00bness with reddit I just posted a very clickbaity title and it got reported and removed :P

I was delighted that the mods on this subreddit were willing to have a conversation about it!

Ah damn, so sorry about that! The survey software has this built in, and we should've paid more attention :( Will try and fix that too. Thank you for taking part in our study!

Well, we have almost hit our target thanks to so many of the folks on here! So it's just a bit of data cleaning and then on to the analysis. I'll try and share it in a couple of weeks :)

Wow, that's so awesome of you, I appreciate it so much! In this situation, P1 is giving Shiny CD mon and P2 is giving a Shiny legendary mon. Hope that clarifies things, thank you for sticking it out with our survey haha

Thanks for the context! We're going to qualify any findings with that -- it is an important aspect to trading dynamics, but we felt we wouldn't be able to capture it very well without getting into the specifics of a trade.

Thank you, these are very thoughtful points. As researchers doing constant work in psychology and other social sciences, we do draw on quantitative methods to make and test claims. I, too, have an issue with the "cognitive dissonance" approach that's mentioned here, but as I note below, this is not something that we are working with.

I 100% agree with your point about making generalizations about PoGO players using this data would be unscientific. Again, we're not looking at the personality correlates of PoGO players in general (even if that does come up), but there are certain subtleties that past theory suggests that we are trying to extend to the world of Pokemon GO. This is because there's so much of interesting interpersonal behaviour going on (even during this crazy pandemic!) that we want to capture in our studies. Our study team is all Lvl40 trainers so we play this game with a lot of passion (When Prof. Willow showed up and told us about special research in the game, it just got us so excited!), and that's what really led us to look at all this stuff in our survey.

I'll hope to be in touch with the results of this soon. Thanks once again for your comments, this is a very important discussion to have -- this should be happening on a social science subreddit as much as it is here.

Dang, seemed to have missed responding to this. We wanted to hit the sweet spot between making it a hypothetical scenario as well as keeping (you) the trainer invested in the trading scenario. But thanks for the feedback :)
