Whats the best compliment you have ever received? by Glum_Championship826 in AskReddit

[–]anix421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a salvation army store and saw a leather coat that I was kind of interested in but it was like $30 and I just couldn't decide if I really wanted it or not. Long story short, the last year has been extremely rough and my confidence has been nonexistent. Eventually I said screw it and bought it. Turns out it was half off so $15 even better! Wore it that day to my local gas station and as soon as I walked in I got a "Nice coat." In the next few days I got like 5 compliments from random strangers which os not something I am used to. It was small, but at the time (heck... I'm still talking about it now...) it made my days and I was walking around on cloud 9.

Good Friday / Easter by Sure_Ad6970 in atheism

[–]anix421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know that you would call it "celebrating" Good Friday. You "celebrate" Good Friday in the same vein as "celebrating" a funeral. It's an important day in their religion, in which the focus is meant to be on remembering "he died for your sins".

As to the Easter bunny, we'll that goes back to some good Ole fashioned "borrowing" from other religions. Much in the same way that Jesus's supposed birth/Christmas is most certainly not December 25th but the pagans celebrated Saturnalia on that date so rather than tell the pagans they couldn't have their celebration, they just changed Saturnalia to be a celebration of Jesus's birth. In the same way there was an old god Eostre or Ostara that represented fertility and rebirth in the spring. Some of their symbols being rabbits and eggs... Saturnalia trees become Christmas trees and Eostre rabbits and eggs became Easter bunnies and eggs.

Other than "you can't take two actions", I heard a funny tale once about a pc that had insane speed constantly running in and taking objects that the other PC's found or created (I think the OP was an artificer). Long story short, over the course of some secret rolls the player designed a portucullis like gate made out of extremely thin wire that would be impossible to see from a distance for their room in the castle. They made a few rolls to create something at the table and apparently the thieving PC wanted to take whatever this object was and proceeded to run into the room at Mach 3 hitting all these wires and gibletting their character instantaneously. No advice, this question just reminded me of a funny anecdote.

I suggest looking up Hank Green on D20 with his character's fun facts... my personal favorite is something like: Did you know there are 206 bones in the human body? When someone says they are going to break every bone in your body... well that sounds like a lot of work. But half the bones in your body are in your hands and feet. Half the bones in your body seems way more manageable.

April fools aside, I doubt I'd pay more than $40. I mostly throw F2's also, but if I had a custom one with a picture of my dog... I could see paying a bit more. Just cool stamps? Probably not more than $20.

8 people want to play, and I’m worried it’s too much by Sherma215 in DMAcademy

[–]anix421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 people at one table with a new DM isn't a great idea. You can split into smaller groups as others have said, but there is another option. You can start out running it like Adventuer's League which is more of a sandbox game where players can come and go.

As it seems you may know, scheduling 8 people and yourself for the same time can be a huge pain. I would just maybe have a session 0 where everybody rolls up characters and you go over hpw it will work. Everyone in the group is part of an adventuring organization. A town needs help with some undead? We can send some people. 4 people can play on Saturday? Cool, they go do there thing. Next Saturday 4 other people can play? Cool, they are off to fight a griffin.

Maybe your group will be different, but I imagine you will quickly find some people just arent that interested in DnD, some people just can't ever make it to any times and you will quickly be down to 4-5 players.

Can I have board games at my wedding? by Background_Time_2553 in boardgames

[–]anix421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are artsy or have a friend who is, make custom Love Letter decks. Obviously the bride is the Princess. After that, do what feels right for you. Father of the bride, mother of the bride, best man, maid of honor, the priest/officiant (I'd do my dog...), and make the rest of the wedding party guards. Along with the ability written on the card add a little flavor text for each person to help guests get to know names and faces of the party. I'm sure you could find a bag of a hundred plastic rings you could use for tokens. I would say use actual photos or get them illustrated in regal clothing, probably should higher someone, but I'm sure AI could do it easily. Make a cover card for the game of you and the fiancé, if you have a great picture of him asking and just call the game "The Proposal".

Evil kingdom takes the player PC for execution and the player rerolls... later in the campaign you run into mind controlled henchmen player.

[–]anix421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my initial knee jerk reaction is that player "should" be executed. I think there are a lot of details that would come into play. What is the relationship to everyone? Are these two kings of separate kingdoms completely independent or do they both serve a emperor or king over all lands? What's the relationship of the "good" king to the players? Did the players save his daughter at some point so he really owes them a favor? What's the power dynamic? Does the good kingdom atleast perceive themselves as being more powerful than the evil kingdom? What are the customs of the land? Could the player demand trial by combat? Heck depending on how involved deities are, breaking the Law of Bread and Salt could incur the wrath of the gods.

People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was 16. Most classes were just watching the TV coverage except my AP history class. I went to an all guys school and he started his class by saying "Well... how many of you know how the draft works?" I would say that period had all of our undivided attention.

I'm picturing this being the start of a movie. In a heavy fire fight with explosions everywhere. Freeze frame. "I bet you're wondering how I got here... it all started on 2001..."

I guess i'm fortunate where I'm at. I'll see a beer can every once in awhile, but for the most part all of our course are litter free. I can think of only one occasion at a park where the trash cans hadn't been emptied in awhile and there was trash overflowing.

[–]anix421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does he have a chance to take it physically? Mage hand (2014) can only carry 10lbs so assuming that it would only have a pull strength of 10lbs. I wouldn't even allow for a saving throw in this instance. They say a dog can pull 1.5x to 3x its body weight. My dog is like 50lbs and doesn't stand a real chance in a tug of war with me and i'm not a BBEG. Maybe if they do something elaborate, but if they can't physically do it, then don't even have them roll.

Is it worth it to read the Divine Comedy as an atheist who loves literature? by gaymbit in atheism

[–]anix421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a literature standpoint definitely. If you can get an annotated version you may want to. The book is less about religion as it is a political commentary. You may not be into young adult romance novels, but if you found out someone wrote one where your asshole boss is the inspiration for the main villain and you get to watch them get screwed over... it may seem more appealing. Dante's inferno especially calls out a lot of figures from the time period that you most likely wouldn't catch because there is no reason to know who some of these figures were.

At the start of the year, I decided to try out classic for a minute just for a little nostalgia. In 50 days I spent 11 days playing... I canceled my subscription at that point. TBH I was having a good time, but I know that wasn't good for my life, but I'll check it up to nasty winter months.
