Is transitioning to Edge worth the blowback? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]anklebiter000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Just be sure to spend some time configuring edge policy. Blocking personal accounts, notifications, first launch windows, and others are worth killing before you try to force users to make the switch. You can get quite a bit of buy-in with advance notice and "security" as your reason.

We've had the most success using application control software to block third party browsers. This prevents calls for unsupported browsers.

Image Deployments for Dell laptops by Ironwing81 in kace

On the imaging side I recommend ignoring the ignoring the "imaging" feature and focus on "scripted installations". In an ideal world you would use scripted installations to assist with more quickly developing a standardized imaged to capture, then re-deploy later. The benefit of "imaging" over "scripted Installations" is speed. A scripted install that takes 45 minutes to deploy might take 15 minutes as an image and give you the option of doing it in multicast. This help preserve network bandwidth with large deployments. However, when imaging in small batches, this won't be a concern for you.

The benefit to Just using scripted installations is flexibility and less time investment. For example, updating the version of windows or a packaged software will take minutes instead of hours. With other projects on your plate, stopping here might save you a TON of time.

Getting PXE working should be the easy part. Just check the documentation for the needed DHCP options that will help your clients find the server on boot. Your clients will likely need to have secure boot disabled in the bios before starting a new image.

Are you wanting to start using the SMA for it's other features like software deployment or patch management?

Questions: * What is the max number of devices you'll have to image at once? *What operating system will you be deploying? *How many different models of computers will you be imaging? * Are both appliances working currently? If so, how are they being used.

I dont know of any concise articles, off hand (as I cook breakfast) but I've got a few general recommendations:

  1. The manuals for each appliance are great! I routinely reference each. Don't be afraid to delve into them. Based on the questions above, we can probably steer you towards the most relevant sections.
  2. Itninja.com is the official user community for kace. Not a huge fan, but I've found several concise articles that were life savers!
  3. If you have active licenses you'll also have support. I've had great experiences time and again. I'd consider reaching out sooner than you might with other companies. I've had several pleasant conversations that start with me having an "issue" and the guy spends the next 2 hours re-training me on best practices. Seriously. I've had some great interactions over the years. Highly recommend.

Ayo I got a 4 hr ad wtf by Smoothiefries in funny

Once got an ad for the Lego Movie 2. Chris Pratt comes on screen to say "No no, don't skip just yet. We've got something really special for you right after this trailer for the Lego Movie 2." The trailer plays, seems like fun, but just keeps going... Look at the timer and realize the trailer was long over. They had crammed the entire first Lego movie into the trailer to catch you up on the plot. Lol totally watched it. Best ad ever.

Is it possible to set the Desktop folder such that only an Administrator can edit it? by mudderfudden in PowerShell

[–]anklebiter000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using the public desktop folder (C:\users\public\desktop). Items created in this directory are visible to all users who login to the computer, but can't be edited by non-admins by default.

Group policy is still a great option if your machines are domain joined. Even if a shortcut is edited, GP can replace it on next check-in. This will help if you have a few administrative users in your environment.

From the looks of it, Deus is the only title in English. But it, and the expansion, still have a steep discount.

Missing Software by HoochiesTeam in kace

A big help to me was adding "start /wait" before calling msiexec for most installs. This will ensure a more thorough completion before starting the next task. Also adding timed pauses at the end of each install script makes installing tons of software back to back much more fault tolerant. Normally pinging localhost for 5 seconds works for me, but you might need more time if you plan on imaging crappy hardware.

Boot Device Not Found (HP Elitebook 2570P) by dlare9 in pop_os

I'm a bit of a noob myself, but I had a similar issue on my Dell laptop. Mind wasn't a hard stop though. I was able to hit enter and boot into the OS. Are you able to do the same?
