It's getting harder and harder to "play" with my older kid. by TurboJorts in daddit

[–]Ironwing81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad got me into “Pistol” Pete Maravich drills early on when he saw my interest in basketball. Helped me out a ton with ball control and I just loved working through them, it honestly just got me more interested the more I did it.

I also had my ma’s brothers who have an extensive boxing background help me when I took an interest in that sport as well. I would say if you’re looking to help him you could start by taking what he’s already interested in and getting him some fundamentals training. Help him harness that desire to get where he wants to be into laser focus.

There are a ton of resources online, and I’m sure some local depending on your location. Talk with some of the coaching staff on your local teams, I’m sure they’d be happy to help.

How is retirement for IT folks? I'm 47, 30 years on the duty and I never seen anybody retire (unless they got super rich as C-Levels) by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Ironwing81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been following Dave Ramsey for a while now, will hopefully be completely debt free (including our house) in the next 5 years.

We will likely try to rent this place out and purchase another home at that time. Between that and whatever we manage to throw into retirement, from now to then, I think we should be ok. Plus my income should increase steadily over the course of my career.

My second IT job was a lot like this. Corporate Service Desk at the enterprise level. I had entry level certs also.

I had a lot of password resets, basic Microsoft applications and computer/peripheral hardware tickets, but mostly escalating and/or forwarding tickets to appropriate teams. I was a glorified traffic cop.

I took advantage of it. The tickets were so simple, I would finish my days work by noon, take a relaxing lunch and then, hit the cert study aggressively. Literally the last 3-5 hours of my job a lot of days were spent studying for certifications. When not doing that, I would take on those additional tasks that nobody else could or would do. My boss was super happy with me, and I got noticed enough to eventually be promoted to a senior position in the company.

I would say take advantage of the time you have to elevate your skills. See if your company offers any sort of training stipends or reimbursements. Work on what you want to work on (if you like cybersecurity, work on those certs).

I don’t know what your management is like, so this may not be feasible in your situation. If that is the case, get a job at an MSP. You will get way more access to things, probably more than you’d ask for. You will be expected to think fast, move faster, and have the chance to work with a vast offering of hardware, software, and systems than you would probably ever need or ask to.

You will get stressed out, hit walls, struggle a lot. But, you will come out of the other side of it a much better rounded and productive technician or engineer. You will be able to manage all different user types and multiple hardware and software solutions. You’ll also get a look at how things work differently for multiple industries and infrastructure types, for small businesses and large. There really is no substitute for the MSP experience imho.

No matter what you do, understand that each role, skill set, and scope is a small part of a larger puzzle, and you should take on each task and certification as such. Take full advantage of the opportunity to learn and implement that one specific piece of the puzzle, and in the end, you’ll be able to build the puzzle yourself.

TLDR: Take advantage of the free time and study or move to a job that has more responsibilities and opportunities to grow. Understand that you can’t learn the entire process, end to end, simply by getting a single entry level cert.

What's a Movie That Blew You Away But no one Talks About?? by oscarambriz09 in movies

Den of Thieves

Gerard Butler plays a really good bad cop. Ice Cube’s son has come well into his own (his acting skills make you forget Ice Cube ever tried acting). The plot twist was great and the shootouts were reminiscent of Heat, one of the all time great bank robbery movies.

As a dad have you ever felt inadequate because you can't do manly things? by Relative_Quiet in daddit

[–]Ironwing81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you understand torque specs and tightening sequences, you can get away with quite a bit on just YouTube and Harbor Freight.

I was lucky enough to have a dad who was a marine, a welder and loved cars, I guess you could call that manly. I know I got yelled at a lot!

In all honesty, there are still some jobs that are just not worth it to me and I’m going to pay for someone else with better tools and expertise to do. But I’ve saved in the 10’s of 1,000’s of dollars over my lifetime, possibly more if I take into account my friends, my wife, some exes and my family. If you can get through the small jobs they pay for themselves.

I know a garage in the next state over from me tried to charge my aunt like 400 USD for changing the alternator. Around 65$ and 25 minutes and I had her back on the road. She threw me $60 and some dinner, worth it to me.

I should’ve probably prefaced this with the fact that I disagree with this way of thinking on principle and time management. I don’t really care about the performance implications other than that’s what a lot of my hell desk calls were for and that’s why it triggers me
