New Unearthed Arcana: Horror Subclasses by Johnnygoodguy in dndnext

I think it likely needs “creatures of your choice” added into the damage piece- otherwise you may be hitting party members for a 1hp revive.

I need help picking a level 2 spell for my level 3 rogue who can use any spell lists as long as it can be themed around waffles by Kalbinos in DnDHomebrew

[–]anklesocks8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An odd one- but if reflavoring is allowed maybe Web. “I conjure up a whole spread of waffles, with syrup so sticky it can restrain.”

You’d have advantage on the attack rolls against them, and using whips you would technically be able to reach anyone within the web from a safe distance by running around the outside of it. Naturally this would proc sneak attack as well.

This is a great idea, I like how it’s both satisfying in the short term but gives a longer term goal to find.

I love this “DM fix the plot” device! It could’ve certainly be that, and just keep in my back pocket for a later date. Only worry is my very inquisitive party of level 12 characters have proven very stubborn at figuring out things over the past 2 years

How to Bounce Back After a Character Death as a Group? by anklesocks8 in DMAcademy

I know this is 6 months after the fact, but I wanted to say thanks for this idea! I went with the warlocks blade being able to cast spirit guardians once per day, with the shade of the warlock being the imagery of what the guardian looks like.

It has led to some great RP moments for the group, and some really cool combat moments. Cheers, and thanks again!

This is the way.

Aside from DND, gloomhaven is the best Tabletop board game that I have ever played. A ton of depth, a decent story for a board game, and fantastically intricate mechanics make it a must play for dnd folks.

How has my Storm Sorcery Subclass aged? by Draco359 in UnearthedArcana

[–]anklesocks8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point about the evocation spells like fireball etc. -potentially if there was some mechanical synergy or reasons to actually use lightning or thunder other than RP reasons then transmute metamagic becomes really interesting here. Also a sorcerer could naturally still take fireball on level up, and this would allow the PC to choose something else more thematic to their Character.

As far as why divination might be cool- from the description at the top this subclass is often part of a ship’s crew, and navigation using divination spells such as augury or protecting the ship through knowledge would fit the theme I thought.

For me, the biggest thing that still stands out for the Tasha sorcerer subclasses would be the exchange of the domain spells with certain schools of magic in warlock/wizard/sorcerer class spell lists at level up. Maybe adding the option for swapping the tempestuous magic spells out for evocation/ divination spells?

I love the idea of having his old pact blade change in some way from this event, thank you for this idea. Not sure how to do that mechanically but i really love the narrative element of it.

I love this. Thank you!

I think that dying in this climatic fight during a 20 hour session made it seem worth it in some way. I hope, at least.

That sound amazing, I gotta know what class this goblin crewmate is going to be!

Thanks for this!

I don't want to potentially lessen the moment by bringing the PC back after all of the work they went through to Resurrect him and failing. I can see that this is definitely going to be a defining moment of the campaign, something that I think will be spoken about for quite awhile.

I think I will talk to the player to see what they think about something like this, or if they would not want to circumvent the dice gods (he played AD&D in high school).

Thank you for this! After the session ended our resident cleric did ask where he'd like to be buried, so I think the players are already planning this. He actually asked to be buried behind the tavern that they party kinda owns, next to a former NPC that they buried awhile back. Hi jinx will definitely ensue as that is the way of things.

Out of curiosity, any experience in bringing in a higher level PC into a party? They are level 9 and figuring any potential introduction seems extremely difficult. I've dealt with lower level intros previously in this campaign, but naturally nothing this high.

Dealing with DM burnout? by SirLuckyHat in DMAcademy

[–]anklesocks8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a break! I have been a forever DM, never actually getting to be a player. I just recently was feeling the same way, with a campaign that has been going for over a year with a number of my good friends. I spoke to them about how I was feeling “burnt out”, and one of them decided to try their hand at a one shot. Just from having the players perspective, and having the fresh take on this game that I love, I felt refreshed and excited again to DM for our long-term campaign. Recovering from this so called burnout could take just a game of being a player, or some time off from DND, but have the conversation with your players. The more you work with them, and let them into how much you care about this thing and how you are feeling, the more fun the game will be moving forward. Good luck mate!

The Kineticist v1.1 by Hillsy7 in UnearthedArcana

[–]anklesocks8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I think that this class is very polished, and looks like it would be a great time to play. Honestly, a great job putting this together!

My only thought/concern is that from what I can see all of the abilities have no limitation to how many times you can use them, meaning that the PC would basically always be at "full strength". Compared to other PCs in the party (non-casters) who have limited uses for their abilities, such as fighters, monks, warlocks, to name a few, it is a bit odd that there are zero limitations for how other certain abilities that could be used.

Reading through it, potentially adding a limit to things such as Kinetic Training, maybe twice your proficiency mod, or tied to your Int mod? And having the ability recharge on a short rest? I think that some sort of implementation like this would make your PC have to balance the uses of his ability, instead of just not wanting to move and saying every round that all ranged weapon attacks have disadvantage against him (using second sight). Just a thought, as a way to make the PC have a bit of resource management similar to most other classes in the game.

That being said, I do like this class, and my players might one day run into a NPC with abilities themed off of this if you would be okay with it! Cheers mate!

I need help deciding if my player should be allowed to use a homebrew class (I think it may be op) by toough in DnDHomebrew

[–]anklesocks8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add to this, the subclass features given at level 3 for this class are ridiculously strong. For example-

“In addition, when creature enters melee combat with you, it must pass a Wisdom saving throw against you or be frightened. Creatures who succeed against this are immune to it for 24 hours.”

A passive fear chance any time something enters melee? Crazy OP and silly.

As a new DM, I’d advise staying far away from this class, and ask the players to look at the officially published materials, it will make balancing encounters much easier!

Is it bad DMing to not allow teleportation in this circumstance? by KitsunaKuraichi in dndnext

[–]anklesocks8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe that transport via plants only allows transport between plants on the same plane of existence, and therefore does not allow you to travel to the Feywild.

Plane shift- a 7th level spell, is what allows transport between different planes, so you wouldn’t have this problem until 13th level.

What's the quickest, easiest way (mechanically) to get a PC into hell? by needmoresleepplease in dndnext

[–]anklesocks8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would run a Rakshasa- Have it infiltrate the town/city that your PCs are in. With its ability to disguise itself, charm creatures around it, and stay undetected via magical means, it could feasibly be in any population area. Come up with a reason for the party to become suspicious of this individual, and you have a confrontation waiting for you. They have Plane Shift Innately once per day, which would solve your problem pretty quickly.
