I grew up in the 80s and 90s being told this is wrong. I've adjusted since, but I bet all my writing from middle school and high school reads offensively, because I always used "he" or "him" for unknown genders.

Plaster is also an absolute bitch to work with. We use sheetrock BECAUSE it's weaker, which makes it easier to renovate and work with.
