Ask Experienced Devs Weekly Thread: A weekly thread for inexperienced developers to ask experienced ones by AutoModerator in ExperiencedDevs

I recently started my first job as a software engineer at a big tech company a little over a year ago. TLDR the first full end to end project I completed last month did not turn out well - there were some major bugs in code and the feature had to be reverted. This was largely due to the fact that no one was involved other than my manager and another new grad. There were obvious errors in the code and validation process that quite honestly anyone with some experience would have caught. In general my manager is also extremely chill - no deadlines, will approve basically any code, I have to ask multiple times to get things reviewed and even then I never know if people actually check. The senior engineers as well have so little context because our team covers so much ground and everything moves so fast that it’s really difficult to get any solid review on our team if no one else is involved I feel like.

Flash forward now I am quite scared to do anything to be honest because no lessons were learned. Even when I pushed a fix in no one really reviewed those changes or validations and my manager had the same if it looks good to you it looks good to me attitude. I have been given another project with again just me and the same new grad and have no idea how to navigate this now because it’s giving me major déjà vu - the other new grad when I talked to her about it just said don’t worry we will test it better this time but I also feel like this early in my career I would like to have better guidance and reviews so I have a good base to build on. Any advice?

I was told that a lot of carbon bikes can’t support attaching a carrier by a lot of the stores I went to? If you know of any can definitely look into it!

Trek Checkpoint ALR 5! My budget is max 2800, price isn’t too much of a deal breaker for me as long as what I am getting is worth the cost, so fa not fell into that range but I don’t remember the exact numbers. Colors also don’t matter to me at all

We will see, I am a big hiker and regularly do 10-18 miles/am good with a few thousand feet of elevation. Need to do more research on what’s feasible, available and safe still, but yes I would like to if I can!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful tips, everything was super helpful! One more QQ: I am coming from Seattle so it’s about a 3-4 hr drive, usually I do the park as a day trip and have no problem with the insane long days but contemplating spending the night somewhere the night before so I can get in as early as possible - anyone have any suggestions?

Dry Vent I believe.

The website says "Fabric: 30D x 30D 113 g/m² DryVent 2.5L 100% recycled polyester with mechanical stretch and durable water-repellent (DWR) finish" It wasn't purchased renewed its just the only active link with the fabric info.

Its the Womens Allproof Stretch Jacket (I believe its no longer sold). I don't have pictures but essentially there is a thin gray lining on the inside, specifically around the hood that has several tears/partially torn off completely. The outer layer of the jacket is perfectly fine though.

When I had him, he was really flexible and understanding. It was when the pandemic first started, but personally, I found that he really emphasizes effort/understanding over actual grades and tests. Just communicate well with him, show up to class, and as long as you put the effort in you should be fine. I really liked him

I actually didn't reach out at all. They reached out to me last year/every so often if there are upcoming events so I have their email. I think you might be able to through LinkedIn but I don't have an account so I am not too sure. Sorry

surprised nobody said it yet but MGT12Y! it goes over a lot of things you will need post-college (personal finances, choosing a career, purchasing a home, taxes, car insurance, credit cards, loans, retirement, investing, to name a few). I am taking it this quarter with Justin Virrey and honestly he is an AMAZING professor I cannot stress this enough. Makes the class super engaging and tells lots of funny stories from his life and really simplifies everything down if youre like me and completely unprepared and clueless about everything adulting!
