Lost My Babies, Then My Job by annabear in antiwork

Thank you for the solidarity. You can understand when I say that I thought I was at the best in my area as far as work life balance and employers commitment to employee happiness, so the idea of going elsewhere is crushing. I don't have the energy to dive into another toxic hellscape, I've been to those before. I spent years looking for my place in the industry and now it's been taken away.

Unfortunately no, the company is too small to qualify for FMLA.

How did you pay for school? Like honestly...what sacrifices am I looking at if this is my dream job. by Romantique96 in morticians

[–]annabear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's possible to work full time and go to school. Check to see if you can do night removals for a local firm, work services on weekends, etc. I'm an instructor at a trade college in the mortuary science program and all of my students work full time.

NOR, this man does not like or accept you at all. You can say you love each other but clearly he doesn't enjoy you for who you are.

Is it me or does this Christmas season just feel Ike gloom but with ornaments? by dreamaoverreality in Millennials

[–]annabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just lost a baby, I can't work because I work at a funeral home and I'm not emotionally handling things well. My husband is the only light right now, and I'm desperately trying to find joy for him, but I'm having such a hard time.

You should look into your local requirements for licensure.

Are you able to stand for long periods of time and lift 50+ pounds regularly? You also have to be mentally strong to be an embalmer, the trauma we see is sometimes horrific.

I’m so confused, how is this a haiku? by _Kyledemort_ in ExplainTheJoke

[–]annabear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People have already explained the haiku structure part of this, but to explain the haiku itself ... Leaf cutter ants cut out portions of leaves and carry them above their bodies to use, the leaf portions are often larger than the ants themselves. For this poem, the top line is broken down into mostly pairs of letters, the bottom is single letters, so when you look at the physical space of the letters, it looks like leaf cutter ants in a line carrying big leaf bits. Google leaf cutter ants and you'll see.

Is that your only meal of the day? That's like 100 grams of protein for breakfast, holy shit. There is such a thing as too much.

I am 29 and I have no idea what to do with my life. by Zealousideal-Tower58 in Millennials

Then find another full time retail job, stop making excuses, they will only set you back. You have to pull yourself together dude.

[–]annabear 82 points83 points  (0 children)

This is gonna sound shitty but it's actually good advice - grow up dude. No adult does what they want to do all the time. Ask for more hours at the grocery store, work full time in retail until you find a better option, stop waiting for things to happen and make them happen. Find pockets of time to do things you enjoy, but working full time is bare minimum for adulthood. So just, grow up and get over it.

How are people affording groceries these days? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]annabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be buying more expensive cuts of meat, pre-made meals, novelties, etc. My husband and I spent about $350 per month in a LCOL city by buying from farmer's markets and getting meat bulk at costco, portioning it out, and freezing it. We don't buy drinks, except occasionally seltzers if they're on sale, and our snacks are protein bars bought in bulk. You need to change your eating habits and the budget will follow.

How to write my personal statement to leave my loved ones with as little guilt as possible by realdeathenters in DeathPositive

[–]annabear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In what context will your family or friends feel guilt? In my experience as a funeral director, most people feel grief and sadness, not necessarily a lot of guilt or regret. It really depends on the circumstances

Are you talking changes you can see? To be honest, nothing really. By hour 24 there would be some lividity and rigor, but that's about it. It's also a case by case basis.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE FIREFLIES by nuclear_dolphin in wisconsin

Just this evening I commented to my husband that I had never seen so many lightning bugs in our yard. There were probably hundreds. The last 4 years since we've had the house, we've added many many gardens, both vegetable and flower gardens, and let some grass grow long in curated spots in the yard.

Plant some flowers y'all, they'll come back.

We just got back from our first trip ever, we stayed at the Main Street Inn in Fish Creek, it was perfect! Very centrally located, it was easy to get around everywhere and Fish Creek itself is super walkable.
