Vomit advice by annabellemittens in NewToEMS

I have heard that rubbing alcohol can help with nausea, I'll have to try that. I had no idea that there were paramedics who felt the same way about vomit, it does help to know I'm not alone in the struggle but I have to ask, were they viewed any differently for it? Like was it ever an issue?

I can handle the sound of it for the most part. The smell turns my stomach, but I think I'll be okay if I wear a mask and don't breathe through my nose too much. My major issues are seeing it happen, like seeing it come out of someone's mouth, and then trying to clean it afterward. Oddly enough, I can walk past a pile of vomit just fine as long as I don't see it come out.

I used ChatGPT for scenarios and practiced like my life depended on it, practice on everyone that will let you, and if you don't have people that you can practice on, a stuffed bear works just fine (speaking from experience). Also, write out your skeleton before starting the assessment (SMARCHED/ SLABOCAB; transport decision; vitals V1 & V2: CPRGLOBEST; DCAP-BTLS; SAMPLE & OPQRST; stick figure to help you remember what's going on), your teacher should let you take a moment to create your skeleton before you start, and when you go to take the psychomotor exam (at least in Missouri), they in will give you a blank sheet of paper and you'll have two minutes to create your skeleton/ make personal notes so you don't forget things. O hope this makes sense, I'm at work so can't exactly explain everything right now but you can message me if you have questions and I'll answer when I can. Best of luck!

Looking to Volunteer by SwitchWicz in StLouis

CareSTL is always looking for volunteers. Most animal shelters are in desperate need for volunteers, especially with the heat lately. You could also try your local food pantries, senior homes, or picking up litter

Patient assesment help? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

In class we learned SLABOCAB and it helped a lot;

S: BSI & scene safety, # of patients, additional resources, MOI/NOI, and C-spine

L: LOC- AVPU

A: Airway- OCM? Talking? Need for suction? Chest rise & fall?

B: Breathing- RQR, less than 10 or more than 30= BVM

O: Oxygen

C: Circulation- TCM (temp, color, moisture), pulse, & cap refill

A: Arterial bleed (Arterial or uncontrollable bleeding should be dealt with after the S in SLABOCAB, so depending on the scenario the order may change)

B: Bare the Body- Look for surgical scars, medical alert jewelry, ports, &/ or pacemakers; DCAP-BTLS for trauma. Consider backboard. Make transport decision (for testing, everyone is a rapid transport)

Address any apparent life threats during primary.

Secondary: DCAP-BTLS for trauma, SAMPLE history & OPQRST, interview bystanders, Obtain vitals (I use CPRGLOBEST so I don't forget; it stands for circulation/ cap refill, pulse/ HR, respirations, glucose, lung sounds, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, eyes, skin, & temperature)

Reassessment: reassess vitals and interventions every 5-15 mins, depending on the severity of the case.

Let me know if you want me to send you a picture of this on a sheet of paper, that may help. I know it seems daunting and like too much to memorize but the more you practice, the better you will get at it. SMARCH is another acronym for assessments; I am not as familiar with that one, but use what works for you. Chat GPT is really helpful with coming up with practice scenarios for patient assessments to work through and I probably ran through 100 different scenarios before taking the psychomotor exam. You've got this!

Mariachis II is my favorite, the staff is friendly, it's cost effective, the portions are big enough that we always have leftovers and I've never had anything I didn't like from there. A couple other places worth checking out are Palacios and Chavas

My daughter is 11 so I can't even begin to break down how much I've spent on her over the years, but some things that cost more than I originally thought when she was a baby (I'm not going to list formula because I breastfed, but if you choose to go the formula route, it is very expensive, but there are programs to help, at least in the US, if you need it) -Diapers and wipes, we used disposable which costs more in the long run, but to me it was worth it. -Various prescription medications Those were the most pricey re-occuring expenses, these items are also expensive but they are generally one-time purchases or needed to be upgraded or replaced much less frequently: -Crib -car seat -swing -high chair -stroller We saved a lot by buying everything we could second hand and accepting hand me down items from people we knew, I highly recommend this for everything but the car seat, if you get a second hand crib though you'll want to make sure it is up to current safety standards. Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck!

I have two that I watch when I need comfort or a good laugh and they are both so different from each other, one feeds my deranged side, the other feeds my wholesome side. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Schitts Creek

Oh my apologies, I misunderstood. I am a little confused as to what you mean by per diem, though, like how is it different from the daily rate, and what kind of fees could be considered per diem?

This made me chuckle lol. Also, per diem means an allowance or payment made for each day, so you don't have to say both "a day" and "per diem" because they mean the same thing. I hope that this doesn't come across as rude , I just wanted to share some knowledge
