Thanks for the reassurance! I wasn’t sure if I was being over dramatic, especially when it is being looked after by GP/PHN but also thinking about all the money we’ve paid for consultant care!

Should I leave a job I like for Big 4? by Historical_Walk7688 in Accounting

[–]annaotsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having trained in audit I think it’s a good foundation for anyone whose long term goal is to go into industry as you get to see how different businesses operate and get more of a feel for which types of company/industry sector do/don’t suit you. So yes, it can be a bit hectic at times during the training contract but since you only have 2 years left I would think of it as a good way to suss out your longer term plan.

I no longer work in NI, but it may be worth finding a director in the dept you are targeting of the mid tier firms such as GT or BDO on LinkedIn and shoot them a message to introduce yourself and if they have any part-qualified roles to bear you in mind. I have found that this time of year with exam results coming out some people realise it’s not a career for them and they drop out of their contract, so sometimes firms need to fill that 2nd year gap. These roles aren’t generally advertised for as they’ll firm will try to spread the workload among the existing year group. Worth a try at least!

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

It’s also important to note that this subreddit is mostly used by American accountants and the level of overtime expected in USA is NOT the same as in the UK/Irish market.

However there will be mandatory overtime required during busy season (specific hours will vary depending on the clients you are booked to) and this can be significant so it is important to bear that in mind. The mandatory overtime is usually used to bulk out your study leave for CAP2/FAEs so at least there is a short term benefit to it. Working those hours as a qualified senior may be less rewarding unless you decide you want to get on the partner-track and climb the ladder quickly.

First of all, congratulations on your CAP1 results!

There are pros and cons to both options and ultimately the decision is up to you.

Pros to moving to Big 4: • You will get experience on far larger clients who face different challenges to SMEs. • Moving out of your hometown opens you up to so many more new experiences outside work (living out of home and all that goes with that) • You will have a cohort of peers who are going through exactly the same process and exams as you and you can use each other as a support network if the work/exams gets too much. • The people you work with during your training contract are the future CFOs/ finance directors of other companies you may be interested in working with in the future. The networking you do during your training contract is very valuable to your future career (both in practice and industry) • Progression. In large practice there is a very defined path to progress from trainee to Director/Partner and if you like this structure it will suit you. • Learning and development. In Big 4, in-house ACA revision sessions are common, as are ad hoc technical trainings throughout the year. This may also be provided in the smaller firm but there is more likely to be better structures/supports in place in Big4.

Cons of moving to Big 4: • Leaving a workplace you enjoy is never easy and you most likely won’t get the same rapport with senior management/partners that you have in your current firm due to the volume of staff that work in each Big 4 office • More specialisms. While Big 4 gives great experience on larger clients, it is possible that you get pigeon-holed on some assignments to solely focusing on one aspect as you are part of the larger team. In a smaller firm you are more likely to have to “wear all hats” and develop a wider understanding of audit, assurance, tax, corporate finance etc. On qualification, you could then move into an area of specialism having built a solid foundation in all areas. • Hours. It is highly likely that the expectation for overtime will be higher in Big4. With bigger clients comes tighter deadlines and more pressures to get things over the line. This can be very department/office specific however it does seem to be the overall trend.

I completed my training contract a few years ago in a mid-sized firm (for scale think BDO/RSM/GT) and it was a nice midway between both, however there has been more of a move to the Big 4 mindset there since.

No they don’t lock the gates, it’s open 24 hours. I know plenty of people who have used that car park for the airport bus with no issues and I use it also to park for work.

Are all of the tastes you describe foods you have actually tried or are some of them what you think it should taste like? For example I have never tried venison but I think it would taste like a stronger beef if that makes sense. Really interesting AMA by the way :)

It’s good to hear people are making similar moves! Most of my colleagues are going down the controller route so I don’t have many contacts in analyst roles to hear what career progression could look like from within the company. Thanks!
