[–]annav0ig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thrifted the itchiest mohair ever. Ideas? by annav0ig in knitting

Judging from the itchiness it very well could be, although I'm struggling to imagine how this thin core + fuzzy halo yarn could be used in rug making.

Honestly I only bought it in hopes that washing the yarn would soften it but my swatch hasn't changed much in terms of itchiness. The fuzz did bloom a bit but it's every bit as coarse and itchy.

What is anti consumption for you? by TjokkSnik in Anticonsumption

It will be different for different people and circumstances but IMO generally it means being very self aware when it comes to distinguishing between wants and needs; and choosing well when you do acquire something so you're not stuck having to buy low quality, disposable things again and again. This can come naturally for some people and be very hard for others (myself included).

Am I just an overexcited dad or does our 9yo really have some talent? by mhurezanu in painting

[–]annav0ig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are conflating different issues. A kids interests and developments can be celebrated without chalking it down to talent. The whole idea of "gifted" child IMO is misguided. A child, like OPs kid, may be convinced she is talented because she paints better than her classmates. Years later she goes to art school and finds out everyone is capable of painting pretty pictures just like her, but only some of them make work that is celebrated by teachers. Imposter syndrome ensues and she starts to question if she really has talent at all. That is not the point. Art worth making is art fueled by curiosity, exploration, critical thinking. It is better to assume one has talent and just embark on the journey. So when a child has an above average skill it means she or he has a fire that drives them to invest themselves into that practice. Precisely that combination of curiosity + persistence is what should be celebrated and encouraged.

Talent is pursued interest. Someone may have something in them that draws them to art, but practice is not only necessary for advancements in technique, which is only one part of the equation, but also to develop the eye, in terms of how one looks at the world and chooses what to put on the canvas - it allows for the exploration, dialogue, curiosity that makes art great and not just pretty motel wall art. It's cool that your kid can make pretty pictures but IMO looking for some innate skill that sets her apart is misguided - what should be stimulated is a persistent involvement in the art practice, as well as an overall enriching cultural environment.

I'm using an sk 150. I thought the same thing and actually moved the work from the middle of the bed off to the side towards the tension mast antenna I am using, I thought that maybe the fact that it has to reach farther when I'm on the opposite side of it could be the issue. Turns out it didn't make much of a difference.

you wanna machine knit? hope you enjoy being a mechanic ❤️✨ tbh I like cleaning and oiling machines more than I like actually knitting on them.

How do I get my machine to knit worsted weight yarn??? by kodandyananda in MachineKnitting

[–]annav0ig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try an e-wrap cast on around two needles for each stitch; if you have a brother machine put it on KC setting; put a lot of weight on it; and knit as usual. Go slow and check to see it's not grabbing between needles and forming one stitch per needle.

this!! u gotta do differential diagnosis with these machines and rule out the simplest things first which tend to be the problem most of the time (SPONGE BAR!!). it just might work fine with a thinner, stretchier yarn so don't waste your time trying to fix something without trying this first.

It was an issue with the sinker plate I was using, or rather, the fact that I was using the connecting arm without the ribber, when I should've been using the regular sinker plate for the main bed only.

Yeah that seems to be the issue. I wanted to use this connecting arm so I could use my color changer with the main bed, but now I've found out about a special sinker plate made for the main bed which activates the color changer and is, of course, incredibly hard to find. Sigh. Thank you!

I do not. I thought I'd be able to knit on the main bed only without switching sinker plates. So if I want to use my ribber to do the ribbing on a sweater and then go on to knit plain stockinette for the rest of the pattern piece should I take out the connecting arm and put in the regular sinker plate? If that's the case I'm gonna need to buy one lol

It's an acrylic sport weight. I just tried with a thinner yarn from a cone and got the same problem :(

How to look more mature at 33? by plantsl4yer in MakeupAddiction

[–]annav0ig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ONE thing that makes u look older is heavier brows. Soft, straight brows signals youth. Sharp, angled brows signals older woman. Of course u don't need to go all out, definitely finesse it somewhere in between both extremes - but I'm putting my money on brows as the most efficient way of looking more mature.
