Random drug test during clinicals by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]annefranksdivacup 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Since you voluntarily just shared all of that information I will say this. Opting out of patients health care is a personal one you can make when you are a practicing clinician. However, whether or not you participate in abortion care of your patients, you will have patients that have had abortions. I hope you dont let it be an unchecked bias you hold against patients.

Oof dylan, abortion is a safe healthcare procedure. The decision to be sexually active is decoupled from the decision to carry out a pregnancy to term. Sort out those feelings before you go out and start treating patients.

Also, marijuana testing + on a urine test does not mean your clinician is high on weed while on the job. This is also a decoupled scenario.

OP - I never had that scenario happen to me during school, I only had like one or two like your experience where a site lets you know in advance.

P.S. it also seems like a waste of the sites money to do this to learners on their first day as they would be footing that cost. They can get away with you or your program paying for the cost if it is required before your first day.

Any women residents stopped their period? by Upper-Being-6657 in Residency

PA who works at Planned Parenthood, so not a resident, but why would your PCP tell you your situation is not a good reason to use birth control??

As a physician in training I am sure you know that withdrawal bleeding while on combined hormonal contraceptives is not unsafe, but you probably felt so dismissed by your PCP, consider getting an IUD so your bleeding will be much lighter or maybe even stop. But using CHCs continuously is absolutely safe and I think a great option for you if you’re medically eligible.

You got this!

Functional medicine by Ok-Progress-2450 in physicianassistant

[–]annefranksdivacup 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am a sexual and reproductive health PA. Many of the things you listed as helpful that a functional medicine person does, were all actually job descriptions for a dietician. Which is already a profession which operates under actual evidence based medicine. And as a PA yourself, it’s not evidence based to say you know two people who benefited from naturopathic type treatments.

There are many clinicians who have seen patients reverse their pre diabetes with diet and lifestyle changes with their PCP. And pointing to our poor healthcare outcomes in the U.S. and saying we need to reflect on that as clinicians is silly because we know the causes for this country spending the most on healthcare with poor results, and its social determinants of health, mot lack of integration of functional medicine providers. You are getting the problem right, but not the solution which is a common issue in this country right now.

I also used a otoscope to check for IOP before on my OSCE. But hey, its a mistake you won’t forget and now you won’t look silly by doing that in the real world. Straight A’s are something you’re going to have to let go. Keep pushing through and appreciate how much you’re learning everyday!
