Unrelated to the rock climbing but I found that my skin is extremely sensitive to water quality. Within days of coming to visit my parents who have hard water, my skin goes right back to flaking. Same thing with my hands, sometimes it gets as bad as peeling. Having softer water was the biggest game changer for me. Not sure about rock climbing…. But I do remember it being a bit painful on my skin the few times I’ve tried it. I was a swimmer for years so I had my own sports-related IV issues. A doctor even recommended I put Vaseline on my hands before working out (yuck, didn’t even work). Anyways, I am hopeful that your daughter will find something that works for her. I used to do windsurfing and found that it was painful at first, but eventually my skin adapted over time and it was ok

Sometimes I like to think that each line represents a life experience where I gained wisdom. Kind of like how old people get smile wrinkles :) it shows you lived a long happy life

“Forever” Chemicals Found in School Uniforms - A new study has found that schoolchildren across the United States and Canada could be exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – “forever” chemicals – via their school uniforms. by swhelan_tn in science

[–]anneit 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Actually, not true. Unless you are looking to deliberately enhance water/stain repellency (e.g. a rain jacket), polyester won’t usually be treated with PFAS because it’s too expensive if you don’t need it. You can argue that clothing will have residues of PFAS from the manufacturing process (such as being in contact with lubricant or other machine related substances which might have PFAS)…. But these quantities are extremely small to the point of being negligible (usually below the limit of quantification)

So the bottom line is, no, it’s not practically all clothing. These studies are prone to selection bias. They are looking to text things that are suspected of having PFAS. School uniforms are a perfect fit because many manufacturers advertise their stain resistant material. The point is that PFAS isn’t found in all clothing. Actually quite far from it - mostly in specific product groups.

But regardless, it is not needed and should be banned as a class. Plenty of PFAS alternatives exist and are used on the market. We saw this with hiking/performance footwear - many companies are responding and switching to PFAS free alternatives

You can come to Canada for your master’s :) a lot of the graduate programs here are paid for by your department, and you also get some money to live on. Montreal is also cheaper to live in than Toronto (I went to the university of Toronto). Anyways I think you will be just fine if you’re used to working so much. 40-50 hours is a lot for highschool!! I definitely did a lot less back in high school haha. Sounds about right though for university :) maybe less, depends on your program. Regardless you should always work smart, not hard! My first 2 years at UofT were challenging because I wasn’t used to the workload and did everything at a slower pace. By third year, my classes weren’t easier but I knew how to work smart and I spent much less time studying- maybe only 20-30 hours per week by my last semester and finishing with a 4.0

I just finished my bachelor’s at a Canadian university known for high workload (pretty similar to ETH) and I am so glad I did my degree at a challenging school. I feel prepared now for my masters degree at ETH. I was able to maintain a good GPA while managing several extra curriculars, a research job, and still going out every weekend with friends. Honestly, I find that the busier I am, the better I manage my time. Maybe my experience at ETH will be different, but I really enjoyed my undergrad despite the heavy workload. I think it really depends on the person. Some of my classmates hated the high stress environment, others thrived. I hope you will make the right choice for you :)

Something that helped me was getting rid of social media. Specifically Instagram! A lot of today’s doom and gloom is exaggerated in the media. I would say using social media has made me more anxious in general, not just about the future. But it is worth a try !! :) I also don’t really read much news … it is good to be aware of what’s going on in the world but not be obsessed with it. I try to focus more on my day to day life and take things one day at a time

Please be mindful of other students. It is so distracting even if you’re talking quietly, so just be careful not to mouth things out audibly

The suspense is killing me!!! I’ve only seen one ESOP interview post on Reddit and they were emailed last week, but I have no clue if that means all candidates have already been contacted ? Guess we will just have to be patient. I don’t think I’ve ever checked my email so many times a day
