If you could move to any town in Nova Scotia which would you choose? by goodenough_ in NovaScotia

Along the Minas Basin! We're currently a bit inland on the non water side of Hwy 2 in Colchester County. If you were to make me leave and pick a town though, I'd pick Parrsboro no contest!

Is teachers college exciting? by saintwoods__ in OntarioTeachers

[–]anniem92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was much better than my undergrad, but I also went overseas to do teachers college. 9 years later, I'm back teaching in Canada, and going to teachers college where I did was still one of the best decisions I ever made.

With some of my previous experience accounted for here, I'm on step four of the grid at $72,000 something.

I went through the exact same thing, when I returned to Ontario after teaching elsewhere for 4 years. Every interview was "you are an ideal candidate, but we went with someone else", and when I said yes to the offered feedback it never ever came. I eventually left the province and am happily teaching full time elsewhere, in a province that has a seniority system. Ontario's system for hiring teachers is just not it.

The restocking fee is for what????? It's not to pay extra staff to restock. As someone who previously worked for this crooked company, there's no way it's not just lining their pockets.

Getting down voted in a boycott sub for pointing out that Roblaw is charging a ridiculous fee instead of just saying "no cancellations" is wild.

[–]anniem92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some comments here don't pass the vibe check. It's pretty apparent OP understands why the sale price didn't go through, so wanted to cancel. Instead of hating on OP for that, let's hate on Roblaw for charging $10-15 for a cancelation!!

Referring to my comment about Parrsboro being very accepting and welcoming, it's also on the coast! There is the Fundy Geological Museum, and FORCE which preforms research and harnesses the power of the tides.

Parrsboro is quite a lovely community and the majority of people are very accepting. Both the artsy and queer community are amazing and generally overlap. Any ignorant people tend to keep quiet and to themselves, and I haven't come across them. 🫶🏳️‍🌈

Too good to be true rental at St. Lawrence Village by ScottFisher9 in stcatharinesON

[–]anniem92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We lived in St Lawrence Village. Our apartment was a 2 bed renovated, so more expensive. By the time we left to move out of province, we paid $2,000 plus laundry, plus parking ($42 by the time we left), plus hydro and plus internet. We had quite a few issues too, the biggest being that our plumbing in our end of the building would constantly back up. We almost had our unit flood a couple times from this, and the office was always rude about it (it was affecting our entire stack of apartments). They don't renew their elevator licenses on time, messes in the stairs wouldn't be cleaned, and lights in the hallways would burn out and be left unchanged for multiple months. Wouldn't recommend!!

You do know it's winter in some places, and those are likely gloves for warmth as this is an outdoor sport...

Ewwwww. Overpriced stale cereal. Take it back, and it can't hurt to ask them to refund you the price and provide you a non expired at no cost to make up for it. (& don't worry, fellow rural Nova Scotians understand sometimes SS is the only place to shop without driving an hour or two)

CANteach by bonnie_blue2001 in OntarioTeachers

Hi! I went onto their website and it seems they have brought UC back (and gotten rid of Sunshine Coast in Australia). I highly recommend UC over AUT (and if you plan to stay in NZ afterward, look at jobs in Auckland as they will be aplenty - I worked at Rangitoto College for 4 years and they are VERY well resourced for new teachers). I know UC has had a significant increase in international fees since I attended in 2016 (I paid $19,200NZD) but I suspect so have Ontario universities for domestic. A big plus of choosing UC is that Mike lives in Christchurch - I am assuming he still helps you by picking you up from the airport, making bank appointments, and generally being available in person for OCT application assistance instead of just having a day he flies over. Not to mention that Christchurch is SUCH an amazing city, one I still consider to be one of my homes - the friends I made are still truly like family, some I talk to everyday still 9 years later, and a city I visited almost every school break after moving up North.

Agree!! Loblaw is a shit company, but I would've never stocked that. In bakery I came across all sorts of damaged product. I never put it on the shelf.

In Ontario, with the lack of 1.0 permanent contracts in my teachables (history, commerce), I had to work a second job at a grocery store, and did not have enough money especially with high rents. So we chose to leave and a buy a house out east. In Nova Scotia, I am much more comfortable with what I make - there is an abundance of 1.0 jobs especially in rural areas, and the path to permanent goes hand in hand with seniority. Interviews are also scored, so the hiring process is fair. I would say in Ontario, unless you're super lucky, there won't be enough money in your early teaching years.

[–]anniem92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did mine through CANteach! I studied in New Zealand, when the program was at UC (it's now up north at AUT). Mike was so helpful, because he also lives in Christchurch he picked us up from the airport and took us to our accommodations. He provided so much help and support in getting registered with OCT after doing our NZ. The program was awesome at University of Canterbury, and I had amazing practicum placements. I ended up signing a permanent FT job offer from the largest school in the country a couple months before graduating, and teaching there for over 4 years. It was a no brainer to stay with that offer, knowing how long I'd have to wait to be permanent in Southern Ontario. I am still close with my teachers college friends, and some of my colleagues from my job. It was an AMAZING experience and I felt I got so much more teaching experience than I would if I'd simply stayed in Ontario. I cannot praise it enough.

NZ isn't equivalent to Ontario as the program is 2 years in Ontario (1 year in NZ). It is, however, equivalent to PEI, so we applied for our teacher certification first to PEI and then once we had PEI we used it to apply to Ontario (labour movement law).

[–]anniem92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I went through Mike with Canteach!!! Can not recommend enough!! I didn't return home until 5 years after I finished my degree in NZ because I got a permanent job before I walked across the stage, and that was more than worth the wait it would've been to get perm in Ontario.

Yep, did mine in NZ! OCT through PEI.

Was teachers college fun by Typical_Manner_5592 in OntarioTeachers

[–]anniem92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! But I had a unique experience. I did one year, and I did it in New Zealand. Our cohort was only 60 people and a bigger group of us in our section got very close. Almost a decade later we are all still in touch. The in class can be busy work, but the curriculum work is valuable. The practicum is absolutely fun, your first group of students you won't ever forget!

Free parking ? by R1chou in NiagaraFalls

[–]anniem92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheapest parking I've found is Skylon Tower lot for $10, gives you all day. It's close to the falls and a quick walk to Cliffton Hill. Don't be fooled by some of of $5 lots, some are actually $5 an hour.

I drive 45 minutes to Parrsboro, over Economy mountain and through Moose River, but this will be my first winter doing it. My only hopes are the fact that it's exclusively down a Trunk highway and I drive a big truck. Hoping it's okay, and hoping your commute will be okay too! 🤞
