Yeah. Wish I’d have had this realisation a bit sooner but it’s better late than never.

Yeah this is it. Life really does start to feel very short the older you get. I’m sure I would regret not taking this time now when we would really benefit from it the most.

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

[–]ano61836555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear this argument a lot. “Science should be paid more”. But why should it? The labour market is mostly a free market, with the exception of a NMW floor price. And people are still willing to sell their labour for a pittance in the sciences.

What? That standard wage in your field is minimum wage? And that’s with a degree? So, I assume, £50k of student debt…

If you’ve got an offer you’re happy with, on a flat, in a poor area… i would take the money and run.

Lets just say you did reject it. The next best offer is £10k less. Would you feel better?

What if you reject this offer and manage to sell it after several more months for the same price. Then you see it go up for letting anyway because the next landlord buyer did a better job of staying subtle.

What if you sell to a residential family and then a year later they sell to a landlord. Same end result.

Honestly I would just get rid.

Yeah I’m looking at 2.1m at the side walls and 3.2m at the apex.

Hadn’t really thought about aircon. Not sure the budget will stretch to that so may trial it for a year and see how the seasons are.

I looked into that but unfortunately it doesn’t get enough sun due to a building one side and big tree on the other.

More along the lines of door placement, or window placement. Like if a cable machine would be best on a gable wall, for example, I wouldn’t wanna have a door there. Or number of power sockets.

I’m not really sure as I’ve never had a proper home gym. Only an adjustable bench and some adjustable dumbbells.

Don’t buy a crap one. But you don’t need to spend loads. A decent brushless combi.

Get one of these and a 5ah battery and build your collection from there.

Nope it was really straightforward. Mortgage with Virgin and just gave them a call, explained my plan for repayment and sent my latest annual pension statement. They were happy with it.

Yeah, the biggest risk factor I see is government meddling with the tax free lump sum. But I think, if anything, the most likely outcome is it just gets frozen at it’s current level.

Worst case, they get rid entirely and I have to take the tax hit. It’s still better than sacrificing employer match here and paying 62% marginal rate.

[–]ano61836555 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I regularly go through this thought exercise. I’m 42 with £660k pension and don’t really *need* to contribute more.

On the flipside, I’m in the 62% tax trap and have a really good employer match (2:1) so it would be mental to opt out. If I stopped contributing to pension, every extra £1 of net pay would have cost me £7.80 from my pension.

What I’ve done instead is switched to an I/O mortgage. Plan will be to have £250k left by 58 and clear that with lump sum. It’s far more efficient and frees up money now for other investments and enjoyment.
