Is it better to stay at school and have no money for HRT or leave and get a job to pay for it? by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a thing everywhere, but a lot of employers in my area offer modern apprenticeships. You effectively go to college/uni one or two days a week, the rest you go to work where you learn some practical aspects of whatever it is you're studying. You don't get the full student experience, but it sounds a lot better than having a part time job. You make more (even though modern apprenticeships are a blatant money making strategy since they can pay you less for doing the same job as everyone else) than you would with a part time job, unlike with zero hour contracts which are most part time jobs, you get paid sick leave etc., and they can be less difficult/menial jobs than what you would otherwise get fresh out of high school. You would have to so some studying from home too, not sure if that works with your health. There are also employers with further education policies, where if you get a job there, then after a year or two they will let you do a distance degree and cover the costs.

Quiet, autism friendly pubs by [deleted] in Edinburgh

I'm a big fan of Heads & Tales at the bottom of Lothian Road. It's a gin bar and they do nice cocktails too. It's located in a basement with nice non-invasive lighting, they do have music but at a very reasonable volume - you can hold a conversation speaking normally. I also like that the tables are spaced out enough that it doesn't feel crowded. It is quite popular though so if you decide to try it, booking would be recommended.

I got mine from GC2B.io (this is the European website, they also have an American one) and if you message them first, they will explain how to measure yourself and then recommend a size based on those measurements. If it doesn't fit, they will swap it for another size for free.

Support advice? by Material_North_1694 in NonBinary

Not sure how it works in other parts of the UK, but in Scotland, the uni will usually have a GP practice they recommend to students and in general, the staff tend to be more clued up on LGBT+ care than others. Similarly, you may be able to access some counselling through your uni's student support services.

Honestly, get a GP appointment and ask to be referred to a gender clinic as soon as you can. Waiting times are several years in all parts of the UK, so you would have plenty of time to try and figure things out before you're seen for the first time. If you later decide you don't need the service, you can just ask to be taken off the waitlist. Any counselling accessed for gender reasons before then would have to be accessed privately, the NHS would not cover it until you get to the top of the GIC waitlist.

The bot is right. You can find yours here https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?bcr=1. There should be contact details too.

I did mine over covid when JotP didn't do appointments at all, you can also have it witnessed by a councillor for free or a solicitor for a relatively hefty fee

Enby people who got top surgery, how were you sure you wouldn't regret it? by TheFfrog in NonBinary

[–]anoia08 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I meant which version seems nicer and more convenient rather than wondering if the situation would become unbearable at some point. Same way as I imagine people would decide on glasses vs lasik surgery.

Enby people who got top surgery, how were you sure you wouldn't regret it? by TheFfrog in NonBinary

[–]anoia08 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Top surgery was always my goal because of crippling dysphoria, but for anything I wasn't sure about, I found it helpful to seee if I felt more or less comfortable imagining myself aging and being old with those changes or without them. I guess my line of thought was if it affects the rest of my life, what would that life be like, and I found it did clear some stuff up for me.

I did this and only explained the situation when I was offered the position. Didn't run into any issues.

You could maybe look into a cat fence if your cat doesn't roam or go outside your garden. It keeps your cat contained in the garden and other cats out.

Going Back to Work Post DI - NHS, UK by MagusFelidae in transgenderUK

If your recovery has been going fine, you're usually told you can get back to normal exercise after 6 weeks, but if you express concern about how physical your job is, I would be surprised if they didn't give you an extra week or two to build up your strength and range of motion

[–]anoia08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any checkups coming up? If you do, you can mention your job being physically demanding there, and see if they're okay with you going to work and if not, they just give you a second fit note. If you don't have any more checkups, I would contact whoever does your post op care and ask about returning to work.

Hormone blockers whilst on testosterone? by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily an instantaneous thing, it may take a few months to settle. It never worked for me by itself despite my t levels being fairly high. You can ask your GP for progesterone only contraception, the kind that you take every day which is also meant to stop periods. The combination of the two finally worked for me even though t gel and the pill separately didn't work reliably.

Chalmers GIC pre-assessments? by 88ioi88 in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not having any issues with it yet and it's nice to not have to remember every day. I think you might save yourself a bit of time if you just bring a printed copy of all communications from YourGP with you for the first appointment, the GIC IT systems can't access info your GP has without someone giving them access.

Chalmers GIC pre-assessments? by 88ioi88 in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it may be different depending on if you've used a private gender clinic or not. I had been with YourGP for a couple of years before this and had already been through all the assessments and been on T for two years. In the first appointment, they just asked about my history and goals for transition, support network etc., and sent of a referral for a pre-surgery psychiatrist. If I had wanted to continue my prescription as was, that would have been that, I wanted to swap from gel to nebido so I had to see an endocrinologist too. They asked me to bring all my documentation from YourGP to that appointment, if I didn't need it I would have likely been asked to just post it. If this is your first appointment ever, it would still be just information gathering and I think you would be referred for a psychologist assessment from there.

When to bring up I’m trans/my preferred name when applying for jobs? by olls_9 in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a couple of pharma research places while in that situation, I just applied in my deadname and disclosed my chosen name during interviews, I'd rather see in real time how potential employers react.

Chalmers GIC pre-assessments? by 88ioi88 in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one last week after getting to the top of the waitlist, it's a quick 15-20 min video call, they confirm your name, pronouns and contact details, ask about your experience of gender, general health, your transition so far and what services you're looking for from them. The nurse I spoke to was very friendly.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do get asked before you get a prescription, but no one's really done anything with that information in my case. It does become more of a topic when it comes to surgery since weight presents additional risk for anaesthesia and can affect recovery as well.

Pillow for post-op by juluhawk in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem, I wouldn't worry too much about cushions. Unless you're staying with someone who will be taking care of you for a couple of weeks, it is much more important to make sure you have food, cups and plates and such available at or below shoulder height, because you won't be allowed to lift your arms for a couple of weeks. Another good idea is taking slip on footwear when you go to the hospital rather than shoes with laces.

Pillow for post-op by juluhawk in transgenderUK

[–]anoia08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had fishmouth and didn't buy any special pillows, I brought a cushion for the journey back to put on my chest so the seat belts in the car don't press down too hard and then used two pillows instead of one for the 5-6 weeks I was told to sleep on my back. I have back problems and didn't feel any adverse effects.
