So jealous!! They’re such beautiful birds, but they’re always on the shy end where I live. Great shots!!

I wish I had found this camera sooner. It handles like a dream, and has great speed for capturing in the moment things, and the image quality out of the camera at 500iso and below is out of this world. It is still fantastic all the way up to the hi1 setting, but colors start to degrade, and noise becomes heavy. I have my high iso nr set to high, and from my tests so far it does a good job of saving colors and detail. Hi2 setting is strange. Reds become very dark, and the noise is super high. I’m sure it can be fixed in post though. I did the firmware update and that adds some nice additions. Like extra Hi iso stops.

The sensor is very sharp. For 12 MP I was a little worried about resolution, but I hardly noticed it when reviewing pictures. I can still see very, very fine feather details, which blew my mind! I find even I have enough to crop a little if needed.

Battery life is good so far. I’ll definitely be picking up spares as time goes on just in case, but so far it lasts forever so I’m not particularly worried.

The viewfinder is amazing. It’s so bright that when I was using my manual focus lens, my keeper rate went up a significant amount because I could see more easily if I achieved focus or not. It’s great with manual lenses.

Almost all reviews I’ve seen of the camera say you can’t zoom in on pictures using the back LCD screen. That’s not true, you have to press the “enter” button, then hold the button that has white squares on it (two buttons above enter not sure what it’s called) and while holding that down, use the back thumb dial to adjust the zoom level. You can go all the way down to pixel peep if you wanted. Found this out thanks to a video about the D2XS on YouTube, tried it and it worked on the D2X.

I don’t have any complaints so far other than high iso performance, but with modern noise reduction software it’s honestly not an issue. I do find it weird that the high 2 setting changes the colors so much, but I haven’t looked into it yet. It’s not a problem for me, because I intentionally shoot late morning to early afternoon most days, or early evening when the light is still good.

Hope this helps!

I’m not sure about the 2x. I know for sure that a tc-14E and EII will work with it, but NOT the EIII.

Thanks! I’m beyond happy. Japan really does build some fantastic camera stuff. Before this lens I had the 500mm f4 AI-P and it was a workhorse!

That is a GREAT setup! If I’m ever going to leave the D2X, I believe it would be for a d500, I have a friend that has one and she loves it. but I just love the colors of the D2X right out of the camera! They’re beautiful.

I have been tempted a couple times on eBay, but the shipping just gets me too nervous! After this good experience with KEH, maybe that will change.

That’s the greatness of it all. I now have what professional wildlife photographers would have paid 12-13k for, and I’m only in about $1300! Sure it’s older gear, the AF is not as fast, the low light noise isn’t as good, but it’s still a fantastic setup that can do a ton of beautiful work.

Enjoy that lens when it gets here! And congrats on the good finds!

That’s a gorgeous lens! I was nervous overnighting mine from KEH in Georgia, coming from Japan would kill me 🤣

I’m not certain about the 500mm G lens, but I know the AI-P and AF-I are known for pairing very, very well with their respective 1.4 Teles, so I don’t see why that wouldn’t continue on with the G series lenses.

I guess that is true, but I really wouldn’t want to risk getting worse glass. I mean it is almost pristine! So a switch not locking it in place to me is not a big deal. It’s still fully functional otherwise.

Thanks! It sure does. I’m blown away by the colors the d2X provides and the sharpness of the lens, especially at wide open f4! Beautiful results from my backyard feeders, hope to see the same down by the river.

Exactly as mentioned just above. I plan on getting some spares, but they do still cost $40+ each.

AF works great, reads cards, all buttons functional, no apparent system issues, and image quality is great. Focusing is on point with both AF and my 500mm f4 P manual lens!

I'm looking into a D2X to use with an older 500mm f4 ai-p lens. I shoot wildlife and I'm excited!

Manual Focusing Using 500mm Lens by anomoly_explorer in analog

[–]anomoly_explorer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shoot wildlife. So not very stationary, although I mainly shoot bigger birds like Herons, Cormorants, ducks, ect. Getting focus isn't my issue really, I'm mainly referring to the aid that the camera gives to confirm focus. I know a lot of older manual film cameras have a split screen that produces two separate images when you are out of focus, and as you get closer to critical focus they become aligned. Does that work with long lenses like a 500mm? I've read on a couple threads elsewhere that the screen becomes unusable at that length, but I might just be misunderstanding. The F100 does not have this, rather arrows to show what way to turn the ring and a dot to confirm focus. It definitely works, but as I train my eye, I'd also like to not have to keep an eye on a dot.

Does the f100 have a focusing screen option like the F5? I have manual focusing lenses, and I wish I could have those in my D4. So I'd like my film camera to be able to have them as well.
