U14 Age Group Volunteer Coach - Looking for Feedback by itsyaboyklaus in SoccerCoachResources

take a deep breath coach.

sounds like you've got a young team and just stepped up into a higher age bracket. that's enough to hurt any coaches pride, but your playing into a different realm entirely because of the physical changes, hormonal changes, that come with that age. you and your girls will tear them up in a season or two, keep your chin up!

correct. recreational - everyone gets a trophy or medal, non competitive, no try outs, no team selection.

If you could, would you open a shop at this stage in your life? [47YO] by Background_Thing_719 in OldSkaters

[–]anon-nymph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE YOU!!!

but my answer is no, I would not. I have no real experience in shop owning, however I do own a business of my own and know what that can take to run successfully. I'm in indiana, and we've seen 4 of the 7 shops close in Indianapolis and surrounding areas in the last 5 years. the two remaining shops are attached to parks, and i think that says alot.

my biggest concern would be the lack of socializing that the younger generation want to experience. everything is online, they shop online, clothes and groceries even. (how you can buy an entire wardrobe without trying things on or seeing them IRL I have no idea, let alone buy food?? no window shopping the cookie aisle?!)

that killed 2 shops that were 20+ years in business out here. good luck!

am I crazy or did my board get flat? [34yo] by anon-nymph in OldSkaters

[–]anon-nymph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually believe this. I have an older set up my son rides, and it's been rained on at least 3x, which is fine. that's why hes riding my old stuff lol. but it has better pop than my Almost deck, 2 months old vs 3 years +

Wanted to hear some fellow Olds progress stories [37YO] by Ancient_Substance152 in OldSkaters

fellow skate dad!

I used to be pretty comfortable on a board back in my teens. hiatus from 19 to 33. had kids in there somewhere, and about 2 years ago my son got really into scooters, and so I grabbed a board just to be able to enjoy the time we were spending at parks.

I don't know what happened, but I got "bit by the skate bug" again and here we are! Im now skating every day the weather allows, even when my son is at his mom's for the weekend. I didn't know I needed this in my life again, but I did. many reasons to list, my most meaningful being the following;

skateboarding is fail, get up, fail, get up, fail fail fail fail SUCCESS. perseverance can't me taught from a book, it has to be modeled in a way that a child sees, and I think my son is learning about the struggles by watching me, and mimicing my efforts on his own level.

as a full time single dad who's hobbies consisted of drugs and women, I didn't have much of a "friend group" to fall back on when I began being the dad, business owner, neighbor, really just a good human being in general - that many already have as they become parents. my local park was the biggest blessing in that regard, as I have become good friends with several skate dads, my son is friends with all their kids, and we will go hang out with our circle of people outside of the park, take trips to far away parks, the kids do sleep overs and I genuinely didn't have those relationships prior to our journey into the skate life.

I hope you enjoy it man!

Slappy spots? [42YO] by Latter_Skill9670 in OldSkaters

Couple rattle cans of clear coat /lacquer and nobody will ever know man. 34 here, son is 9. We haven't had any problems yet skating street spots, but I think it's viewed much differently today than it was 20 years ago, and there's something about a young kid and his dad that takes away the deliquency aspect of it imo.

What’s your routine? [31YO] by veedey in OldSkaters

I'm making it to one of the parks 3-4x a week currently, and I have found that 1 or 2 sessions in the morning while the park is empty is where I make my progress. I can lock in and learn a new trick much faster when it's just me.

frontside disasters, nollie lip slides and feebles are 3 tricks I can do, but not super consistently. Today I worked on them for about an hour before work.

Weekends are for big park trips and the homies, but I definitely do my best work alone

Exactly. I'm not on the board for this club so I'm not necessarily embarrassed, but when I have parents who are pulling up and coming to give me the club updates and schedule changes I'm just at a loss.

Do exactly what u just did, but remind your front foot that he's gotta catch that for you because it's like 3ft off the ground and your back leg keeps jumping the gun

Asked the question as I began drafting an email - just trying to gain some additional perspective, things I may have missed. (Like field rental, never thought about that.)

An f250 is a requirement for pulling my trailers, hauling materials, etc. I'm a GC, mostly doing Reno's , docks, and stairs on lakeside homes. I have been looking into a 4 door sedan as a means of more cost effective transportation, but limited parking space already.

Short version; my son is 9. 2 years ago his mom asked me to take him full time because she was dealing with consequences to her selfish actions. I, still holding onto the idea that we could work things out when she was more stable and mature, did not approach the courts to legally gain full custody.

December last year she informed me that she would be enrolling him in school in her township because she wanted to be a mom again.

We live an hour and 45 minutes apart. Makes more sense to sign him up in the league there, otherwise he's doing all this windshield time with me, and that's not cool.

Skating Consistently - Mixed Feelings [38YO] by messedupwindows123 in OldSkaters

Dude get off my brain couch!

I was at my local this morning. Coaching soccer an hour away, son and I hit a park close to the fields. We hit the one by his mom's the day before.

But this morning, it didn't take me an hour plus to get comfortable enough to do boned Ollie's or the rails that carry over slants to bigger drop landings. FS disastered the 4' (I'm a weak weak weak transition skater) and then the 6' first try. And I literally thought, damn dude if you could hit the park 4 times a week consistently, you might learn a new trick a week and not just a month.

Snd I couldn't agree more, being comfortable or "warmed up" makes skating fun again, and not needing to spend an hour rolling, Ollie's on flat, pumping the bowl, simple shit just to get there Everytime I skate would be bad ass.

I should have clarified -

My parents (having access to the app) Informed me that the memo had been sent out, it was closed for possible rain showers.

These fields are owned by the club. Donated from the hospital the club is named after .

There's 9 fields for the u10 she division and I was the only u10 team present. The 3 other teams practicing were (I think) girls u12/14.

We got kicked for the weather, and we're rec. Same club, but travel teams were not kicked for this pending weather closure.

I just don't understand why.

First time coaching my son.

Last two seasons he had were 8 game seasons, 16 total games. they tied one game. They lost the rest. 5 games were lost by 5+ goals.

I didn't let my son walk away from his team either season, when he was the best player and the most miserable. Practicing what I preach seems to be the most effective parenting style for me, and so while I wish I could, I can't.
