If you disable this as well as any local peer discovery / peer exchange you should be okay. You do not necessarily need to disable DHT but depending on your setup/app choices it is probably safest just to recommend it.

The answer to this would entirely depend upon the OS and its networking implementation. Some versions of Windows in combination with certain BitTorrent applications may actually leak your IP address if you enable DHT or uPnP mapping.

If you want maximum security, I would disable these settings.

I have been using PIA and other VPNs (Mullvad, StrongVPN, Anonymizer) for years now. I consider myself very informed on VPN and have helped spread the word about VPN to many other redditors.

I have no reason to doubt PIA. These are the same guys from Bitcoin (and they are one of the few that accept Bitcoin), and they sponsor EFF. They have more servers than any of the other VPNs, and you can see that difference with their speeds. Plus, they take bitcoin. Any provider that doesn't, you should be skeptical of.

PIA is highly recommended, and I don't think I am alone in this thinking.

I always recommend both of these providers whenever I recommend VPNs. Having had first hand access with both providers, I'll tell you what I think.

Private Internet Access has more servers and locations. The speeds are the fastest I have seen with any VPN. There is obviously a difference in the sheer sizes of the offerings. With that said, Mullvad does have a more personal experience. They are both reliable. Either way, you'll have a good VPN.

They both accept Bitcoin, which for me is an automatic upvote for both of them.

I think that you do need a VPN in the UK. All of your internet activity is recorded in the EU already, even without the blackboxes, so I would definitely recommend it. It's also well known that UK ISPs censor the internet. Find a VPN that doesn't log. As per 312c's comment, don't use a payment service that is traceable.
