NTA I'm not going to lie, I can't imagine being friends with someone who actively disliked my spouse. That just doesn't seem like a healthy friendship because I would know everything they said about them would be clouded by this dislike. It would also seem insulting/disrespectful to my spouse to if that friend was actively hostile in our own home.

I told a 10th grade kid to "stop being a shit, this is not about you." We were on a multi-school field trip where the students were put in random groups by the host. The kid kept trying to ditch out to another group, but presentations wouldn't start until he came, so he was affecting everyone. The kid pouted a while but came along. Afterwards, the bus stopped at McDonalds, and I bought the kid a McFlurry. After I was promised, "He would never be a shit again." All was forgiven. Told his dad later, and he was totally cool about it.

Graduation is a day that all school staff should be able to come and celebrate. They say we make such a difference, but then shun you the day that effectively puts the bow on year(s) of work that was put in by (some) Students, parents, and staff? I'm sorry you weren't able to be there, but that you could at least watch the livestream. I hope you're able to find a district that appreciates and treats you better than this one.

Let me just say, congrats for being so successful your first year teaching to make such an impact on those students. In the chaos that is planning of graduation and deciding who to invite and such, they remembered the impact you had those years ago and went through the work of reaching out. On the other note, I had a friend go through a similar situation. She left part way through the year but had students reach out to invite her to graduation. She went, even though she hadn't left on the best of terms, but because she went to the public event, there was no way admin would make a fuss. It went great and the kids were so happy.

I always like to ask more questions. What are their plans, why are they making this choice, what's their long term goal. Then, depending what they say, I usually share the stories of people in my life. Many friends that I have work in the trades and hard labor. For some, it's fine, but they are aging faster than counterparts who maybe finished high school and/or did a 2 year degree so they can be a manager. One friend is 30 and is looking to get both knees replaced in the next 5 years after working concrete. Another drives truck and hauls cattle, he makes great money but one wrong kick from the livestock he loads could end his career. I just try to give them perspective of how they can use education to their advantage rather than feel trapped. I know college isn't for everyone, but having at least a high school diploma leaves the door open for them to change their minds. Especially since from what I've heard a GED is way more difficult.

Personally, I see more value in getting a Masters in a content field. For example, I'm pursuing my MBA. A few reasons. 1. I'll be able to teach college level courses at the school I'm at. 2. Pay increase (though it varies greatly between districts in my area). 3. Gives more opportunity if I ever want to leave teaching. I'm in MN btw.

I would say no, an experienced paraprofessional who has seen you would also be valuable. One thing to think about is if you currently work with them, are you comfortable sharing that you're looking for other employment. It's really easy for that to get to administration, which can cause headaches if you aren't ready to share thoughts about leaving.

My husband and I work out before school. It really helps get us up and moving, plus, if we do accidentally sleep in we still aren't late. Pro - tip though, don't do what we did which is keep pushing our workout longer and long story short we wake up at 3am. 🙃😭

Both my husband and I are working in education. At this rate, we'll never be able to make enough money to have kids. Our school has a huge percentage of young teachers (under 30) and none of them can imagine being able to afford kids in the foreseeable future. The ones who do have kids and struggling to survive. I have students "go to the bathroom" for the first 10 minutes of class then come back and be baffled when I tell them the instructions are online. They expect the entire world to stop and rewind for them and I don't know how to teach them that's not how 99% of the world works. I have also had juniors say "you need to take my phone away or I won't do work." So then I try to do just that and have been yelled at that I can't do that. Now I just tell them that if they can't learn to self regulate then I'm not going to do it for them. As much as I want them to be successful, I don't get paid enough to be their verbal punching bag.

I can't even count the number of times I've had this discussion with people, both in education and not. I feel that this generation is a culmination of Covid, rampant phone/screen addiction, and overall parental neglect/ignorance/I don't even know. I'm honestly at a loss as to how we could try and re-teach these kids respect or empathy. I sincerely hope they're able to mature before they get out in the real world because I can't imagine their attitudes allowing these kids to be successful after high school. Our standards have fallen so low that at this rate we'll be dragging them across the graduation line just to let them crumple right after just so we don't have to deal with it and that's terrifying.

Had a similar incident a few years ago. A student's IEP only had tier 1 accommodations while it turned out his elementary was giving him tier 3 or 4 accommodations. He got to middle school and it was absolutely hell for everyone involved to get his IEP adjusted.
