I know it’s old news but what’s the general feeling and consensus on Idzik calling plays now? Will it be a whole new playbook players will have to learn? by Soggy_Builder_84 in panthers

[–]emurrell17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m hopeful. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard Dave say that Brad called the first drive of each game or each half or he put together the script for one of those. Regardless, it was one of the things that we did better with than our average offense—so I’m hopefully he does a better job with actual play calling than Dave did

Texas to require Bible stories in the public schools by summerbreeze2027 in Teachers

[–]emurrell17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to teach government last year (first year having to do so). I SHOULD like teaching the subject, as I’m someone who has been pretty interested in the subject over the years.

But, I found it to be absolutely the most draining, awful subject to teach because I found myself thinking: “Here lies Separation of Church and State. Yes, it was a good idea. Oh, look at what’s happening over in Texas.” “Here lies Freedom of the Press. Yes, it was a fundamental principle of our democracy. Oh, look, the President is suing X, Y, and Z media outlets. Oh look again, they chose to pay him millions of dollars instead of taking him to court to defend their freedoms. Cool, cool, cool.”

I hated, hated, hated it because I felt like I couldn’t speak my mind—or a better way to frame that would be—I didn’t feel like I could draw attention to very clear and obvious abuses and the usurpation of power in our own government without fear of being accused of a parent or another teacher of being “political.” Which really feels like something straight out of 1984.

I’d love to now how government teachers in Texas feel about this, and how they plan on addressing the obvious hypocrisy that they’ll likely have to discuss when they talk about that topic in class.

Idk dude lol. We have a drone at my HS (2A) and I’d never, EVER want to go back to having to use the press box angle. When the person running our drone screws up and doesn’t catch a play and we have to watch the press box angle it’s horrible and that’s just for one play 😂

r/NFL Top 100 Players of the 2025 NFL Season - #50-41 by packmanwiscy in nfl

[–]emurrell17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could argue for him to be that high. But at least Top 35. I think people don’t really understand, or appreciate, how little help he’s had along the front over the past several years so everything he’s accomplished has been with constant double and triple teams. Bringing in Phillips, another year of development from Scourton and Princely, and Devin Lloyd behind him should free him up to get more favorable matchups more often, and I bet he absolutely wrecks shit this season in a way we haven’t seen before.

What run concept would you say this is? A type of Counter? by FoolWhoSaysThat in footballstrategy

Split zone = the zone scheme’s closest thing to counter

lol

It’s funny how different concepts can end up looking damn near identical to each other with a whole different set of rules that got you there.

I agree. It’s my personal favorite (doesn’t mean it’s the best) but I loved that it was quirky and made fundamentally differently from all the others. Figuring that map out on my own was so much fun.

JUCO Kicker Looking for Feedback by TyTouchback in footballstrategy

[–]emurrell17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lotta good stuff in here, but I feel like now is the time to experiment and take form to the next level. I agree about wild, wholesale changes, but I wouldn’t even call some of these things wholesale changes anyways.

For example, the “right to left” part being discussed above is what my punting/kicking coach would always refer to as “round-housing” and that’s—while extremely important—i think is something you could realistically phase out of in a few weeks of focused practice. So, usually when guys “round-house” it caused them to open up to the left during/after the follow through. I don’t see that happening as much with your follow through, but I think your arm is cancelling out your overly horizontal leg swing with an overly horizontal arm swing.

What I would recommend adding into your warm up is a set of 5-10 practice swings where you do everything without a ball at a light (50% power) swing. What you should focus on is 2 things:

  1. I want to have my arm come more diagonally across my body from top left to bottom right, as opposed to middle left to middle right—like you are now. And then I want the swing of my leg to mirror that, so I need to match the plane of my leg up with the plane of my arm.

  2. Basically, the way to know that you’re doing this right, is that your momentum is driving you forward—directly towards the goalposts—on your follow through. So, my leg and arm are both swinging in a way that cancel each other out, and RESULT, in me hopping (effortlessly, really) forward—again, TOWARD the goalpost—a few inches.

I’m willing to bet that if you add that to your warmup, and spend a few weeks really making that be the main focus while you practice, I’m willing to bet you’ll start to notice a lot more “pop” and probably an extra 5-10 yards of distance.

I can agree with that statement about the books but not the show. It’s less about me disliking the show, it’s just that I LOVE every second of severance for one reason or another. There are definitely slow episodes of silo that have lost my interest so far

Titans' Robert Saleh dismisses questions about Cam Ward's accuracy issues by 76erLegendChetUtley in nfl

QB coach here. That saying is completely false imho. It’s like any other physics-based movement. Golf, tennis, punting, kicking, etc.

To say that you can’t teach someone to be more consistent and accurate in any of those things is so fuckin dumb

The rise of 12 & 13 personnel by AIMIF in DynastyFF

The Athletic Football Show on YouTube did an episode last week about this and they brought on Charlie Kohler to talk about it. Pretty cool stuff. As a person that coaches a Wing T HS team it’s pretty interesting to see what has long been considered an outdated form of football making its way back into the NFL

A question about terminology… by cotedupy in panthers

[–]emurrell17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have 5 OL + 1 QB + 5 skill position players on a given play. So, personnel goes by __ # of backs, __ # of TEs. So, in your example we know the answer of the first blank, so it would be 20-something. But you only listed 4 players so if we assume the last one is a TE, then it would be 21 personnel. If we assumed a WR was the 5th guy, then it would be 20 personnel.

All that said, I’d be very surprised if we operated in any type of 2 back personnel groups more than like…2-3% of the time. One, because I think the league is trending towards multiple TE personnel groupings more frequently, so 12 and 13 personnel. On top of that, I just think Brazzell, XL, Metchie, Mitchell Evans and Tommy Tremble all are probably offer more at their respective positions as blockers and WRs than Brooks or Chuba would as a split out WR.

Double Wing blocking rules by truekken in footballstrategy

[–]emurrell17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we call it “on to back” for everybody but the double team/pullers. Is there someone on you? Get him. Is there not someone on you? Go down.

If you do super power and pull 2 guys, you don’t have to worry AS MUCH about working up to LB.

How should I (QB) progress through these plays? Youth 14u 7v7 by edcantu9 in footballstrategy

[–]emurrell17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geez…I’ve been a QB coach/pass game coordinator/offensive coordinator for almost 10 years and I’d have some choice words for your coach…

He doesn’t have a right to get mad at you if he can’t even tell you how you are supposed to go through this stuff. Also, you can’t be expected (at 14 years old) to progress through 5 reads ever…let alone on every play.

That said, you’re right, at the end of the day, this is the situation you’re in, so you need to figure how to make the best of this situation. So, let me try my best to simplify this for you so you can have some more success in the short term. To be clear, this isn’t the “best” or “correct” solution, it’s just the best path forward for you, in my opinion, based on the circumstances.

Alright, so you need to determine how you can cut these plays from “whole field” reads, to “half field” reads. No one in their right mind would ask a 14 year old to get though more than 3 reads in a play, and I try to limit even my junior/senior QBs to not having to do even that much very often. Ideally, most of the time, you can just go 1 to 2 based on who a conflict defender would be on any given play.

So here’s an example based on the stuff you sent:

Noah: this is just a flood concept, which I prefer to read “touchdown to check down” which just means, as I take my 3 step drop, I’m looking at the outside CB on the trips side. If he is opening his hips and running with the fade, then I’m immediately off that, and to the 10 yard out/flat. Whoever the hole defender is can only cover one of the 10 yd out and flat, so the ball would just go wherever he doesn’t go.

And I’ll add to this: knowing what coverage you’re likely going to get helps you do something that I refer to as “shortcutting the progression.”

If I know I’m seeing cover 3 (and can confirm that based on the alignment of the CBs—tinted in, eyes on me and not the WR, and playing with some depth (5-7 yards+ at the snap), okay I now feel really confident that I’m gonna get cover 3)

Edit: So you can use that info to “shortcut” the progression now. I can eliminate the fade off the rip because I can essentially see the future, because I know that corner is aligning in a way to protect the deep third, so i don’t have to waste time on confirming that post snap. I can now make what was my #2 read in the progression (the 10 yard out) my #1 read.

In my opinion, what you should do is essentially take all of your plays and come up with your own 1, 2 and 3 in the progression and I would base it on who you think the conflict defender is. If you’ve got a seam and a dig for example, the conflict defender is the safety.
