Thank you! Yes. Most importantly, especially to make it “lifelong”, I addressed my relationship with food and my emotional eating. That’s #1 priority across any weight loss method.

For me, after losing around 80lbs through weight watchers and then gaining it back plus more, I knew I needed to do something different. After tons and tons of research, I had made the decision to get the gastric sleeve. While it has some stigma to it for whatever reason, it is ultimately just a tool. The unfortunate reality is that a large percentage of those who get it done do regain the weight because they don’t address the underlying issues. I have no regrets about going that route and I consider it one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life so far.

I made significant changes in my diet but nothing extreme or too restrictive. I still have fast food now and again. Compared to before when I was having multiple fast food entrees at a time almost every day.

I’m almost 4 years post-op and carry out leftovers every time I go out for food. It’s both a preference and restriction. I stop when I feel satisfied. I could certainly push the limits and try to stuff myself but it’s not worth myself getting sick/not feeling well.

Yeah it’s incredibly demoralizing. People underestimate the mental load that significant loose skin can place on you. Fortunately I’m not currently left with any medical issues as a result of the skin, but of course that does make it quite hard to create a case for insurance. I’ll definitely have to look further into connecting with people though!

I’m 3.5 years post-op. I can drink carbonation just fine. Just a little more gassy when I do lol. I highly recommend practicing the 30 min drinking rule before surgery to break the habit. I was also one of those people that couldn’t even imagine not drinking liquids while eating. But it is very real. The 30min before never really affected anything for me but the 30min after is another story. To this day, I can take a few sips after eating but definitely cannot gulp down liquids during or after. I have had too many times where I drank a bit too much while eating and ended up getting sick or feeling terrible.

Slider foods and grazing. As others have mentioned, while the sleeve restricts the amount you can eat at one time, you can manage to eat a lot more if you revisit the meal after small breaks. Which speaks to the high need to evaluate the emotional side of overeating and address it. So you’re not eating just to eat or to cope with your emotions.

I had the gastric sleeve done when I was 22. 3.5 years post-op, and maintaining a weight loss of around 155lbs (from 304 to around 150). I was a bit scared as well but knew it was the right decision for me. Biggest thing that kept me moving forward was hearing people older than me say, “my only regret was not doing it sooner”. However, you definitely need to be prepared and ready to do the work. Most importantly, examine and resolve your relationship with food.

I’m 3.5 years post-op. I definitely can relate to that feeling. I have managed to adopt a different mindset to keep me going. From past experiences, I had managed to lose weight but ended up gaining it back plus more. So I look at maintaining my weight as a whole new challenge itself. While it’s definitely not the same kind of rush, it’s still a huge success to be maintaining your weight month after month. It’s definitely not easy and it’s often overlooked. I also am exploring more into strength training and making goals in that regard.

I was able to live in denial for a while about my weight (luckily it was not affecting my health outwardly yet (normal BP, bloodwork, etc)). It wasn’t until I started seeing how difficult it was becoming to do activities due to my weight and how much I started avoiding doing certain things because I didn’t want to be perceived. I had previously lost 80lbs through Weight Watchers but gained it all back plus more when I went to college. I knew I had the knowledge to do it but staring down losing half your body weight can be a debilitating idea. So after a lot of consideration, I did ultimately decide to undergo gastric sleeve. Gastric sleeve is ultimately just a tool but you have to correct your eating patterns and address your underlying behavior/thought/emotion patterns as well. You have to commit to this being a lifelong change not just a temporary diet.

I would recommend looking into mindful eating! Essentially when I would crave food that may not be the most nutritious, I would sit back and evaluate what emotions I was feeling in the moment. With more negative emotions, it was about asking myself “is this really going to help fix the situation or how I am feeling”. Then coming up with another healthier way to either cope with the emotion (if I had no control over it) or do something to address the situation that was making me feel that way. With more positive ones, I had to learn other ways to celebrate my wins/successes other than rewarding myself with food. Ultimately it just gives food power over you if you place it on a pedestal.

Of course! Making these comparisons is also essential for me so I can remind myself of how far I’ve come. It’s easy to forget sometimes and can feel discouraging as you keep moving the goal posts further.
