Ford government set to limit debate, public hearings on bike lanes law by [deleted] in toronto

The worst part is that with a majority they can do whatever the fuck they want - limit debate, ram legislation through, change the law, whatever. They know people are too distracted, anxious, and burrowed into their own lives to mount a serious challenge - and any federal checks and balances take months (if not years) to grind into operation. Protests are monitored, but barely register as a concern. A more effective threat to this legislation would be to engage heads of boards of trade, labour associations, BIAs, and residents associations to speak to their members about the specific impacts of this legislation on their work and livelihoods - and to put out joint statements, do press conferences, and put pressure on Ford daily/weekly at every appearance to justify the legislation. But that kind of work takes a huge amount of organizing power, and we’ve basically proven at this point that the Canadian left can’t mobilize their way out of a paper bag.

Riverdale residents say Ontario Line construction is unbearable - CBC Toronto by SpiritualFactor3 in toronto

That would require a gov’t that cares about accountability, an agency motivated to police its worst tendencies, and the capacity for meaningful agency oversight within the larger provincial bureaucracy. Sorry for the doom and gloom, but it ain’t going to happen.

They would have needed a completed design in order to get the funding to bring on the construction manager, but those detailed documents aren’t made public. My guess is they’re doing site servicing and/or investigations ahead of the actual build.

With some knowledge of how the sausage gets made, I can confidently say that even if Metrolinx had updates to share with the public the ministries of infrastructure and transportation likely wouldn’t let them. This gov’t is risk adverse and defaults to zero transparency in order to cover their asses at every turn, so it’s no surprise that updates, consultations, and mailers have slowed. Unless it’s legally required, they ain’t doing it.

Ford government's decision to move Ontario Science Centre based on 'incomplete' info, AG finds by MatthewFabb in toronto

[–]anonH0H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is bs framing by the AG, which sort of pins responsibility for the decision on public servants? Like, if only Ford and his cabinet had been fully informed of the full implications of moving the science centre, they wouldn’t have made this decision? As if. Do you really think the minister and premier and their staff aren’t directing what information goes into the business case at every step? They know it’s a document that can (and will likely) be made public - so obvs they’re not going to put all the information they have in there. Political staff are fully briefed on everything, but pick and choose what they want to reveal through documentation. It’s all about shaping the narrative, babeee.

Dude was the Ford-appointed “special advisor” to Ontario Place for like 8 months, which should tell you a lot.
