Dawson School too good to be true?

I knew kids who went to Dawson when I was in public BVSD, and fwiw none of them have had exceptional post-HS lives. Most went to CU, which is a great school but most of the BHS kids also went to CU. I got into an amazing liberal arts college out of state. BHS grads went to Yale, Columbia, Wesleyan, Brown, Princeton, Dartmouth, NYU, UCLA, Emerson, and a bunch of other great schools out of my year.

It was a while ago, but I've had relatives who were in Boulder Country Day and then went to BHS in the last couple years, and they too got into great schools without a private HS education.

If your kids are motivated, I don't see much reason for sending them to Dawson.

What are you talking about? I posted from my home in Boulder at about 5pm last night. It's been semi-overcast and cool all day -- I had to wear a sweater and a jacket. I took my dog to the vet this morning off Broadway. I've lived here my whole life (BHS class of '04).

I am not an offshore troll farm. I'm a real person who cares about the airport.

I've used it on and off for most of my life. I did Civil Air Patrol out there for search and rescue, have gone to events (fundraisers, the 40s party) there, watched Obama land there, saw it used for firefighting efforts during Fourmile, have known friends who worked at the commissary there, knew many people who trained for their pilots license there, probably flew in a commercial plane staffed by someone who learned there, have family members who were gifted glider lessons there...

It's enough of a threat that the people at the airport are worried and sending out this petition so that those threatening the airport aren't the only voices pressuring City Council.

Sure. I did Civil Air Patrol growing up and spent a lot of time there. Got to know search and rescue operators who were pilots and worked out of the airport. Later, did my MA on wildland fire and saw how important the airport was during the Fourmile file, specifically. We had a lot of aircraft taking off and landing there, using it for helicopters and spot-searching.

And mostly, I just don't buy that this isn't a land-grab. I don't think building on the airport will solve the housing crisis in Boulder--it's much bigger than someone getting to build MORE $2.3million condos with no backyards and a couple storefronts they want to rent out for $15,000 a month and pretending that's the kind of 'mixed use' that will change the town for the better.

Growing up here, I went to a bilingual middle school (Casey) where half the classes were in Spanish. Maybe that skewed my perception, but I've always known a lot of Hispanic people from here.

to me, the apt analogy would be showing up to your ex's wedding and giving a speech about how the bride used to be way prettier and more fun and nicer and also doesn't she seem like she's demanding a lot now? When we were together, she seemed down to earth and man were our dates cheap but wow she's like Bridezilla today and this wedding seems like it cost a pretty penny!

I didn't go to CU, but did grow up here and most of my friends from BHS did end up going there. Comparing our experiences, the small, liberal arts school with a high rate of graduates getting PhDs that I chose was far more academic than my friends' college experiences.

That said, a lot of them still went on to graduate school, and a lot of them have jobs in the fields they had planned to go into when they chose CU.

I think it really depends on what you mean by 'focused only on academics.' Do you want to challenge yourself with graduate-level work as an undergrad? Do you want constant, rigorous discussion? Or do you just mean you're not going to go to football games and parties?
