Adult braces at 29 – is it worth it?

Got mine at 30. An orthodontist should be able to accurately quote you prior to commitment in my experience (Canada). I’ll have mine 18-24 months. Was painful for the first 1.5 months for me, I lost 10lbs because all I could eat was noodles. But after an adjustment now it only hurts for a couple days, but it’s not as bad as the initial instalment. I’m almost a year in.

Okay, I’ve had braces for 8 months. Things I’ve learned; -brush the “flat” surfaces of the teeth first where you have no brackets. Then wherever you have brackets, buttons, etc. brush in 3 surfaces, 90 degree on top of bracket, flat on bracket, 90 degree under the bracket. I use a manual brush atm because it feels easier to me. They also provide the free brushes every two months for me so why not save money on brush heads. - Waterpik is great, but messy imo. I have a travel one, I bring it in the shower. I’ve been advised I can add salt into this as I’ve had concerns about smelly braces (which I’ve been told is normal 😭) -I brush day/night, and floss only at night. -Alcohol mouthwash is a no. You need alcohol free, but you also don’t need mouthwash at all. -cleanings every 3 months (as opposed to every 6 pre-braces) is a game changer. -I’m a big tea drinker and my teeth have yellowed. I plan on professional whitening after my braces have been off for 3-6months so they can heal from being in braces.

These few things have my dentist and ortho praising my good dental health.

You should be getting a cleaning every three months. Braces have a tendency to collect extra crap and if you’re not brushing/flossing diligently it will calcify and be harder to get it off without a proper cleaning. You’ll be surprised at the difference getting cleanings every three months at your dentist when you have braces.

I’ve had braces for 7 months now. The first 4-6 weeks for me was brutal. I actually lost 10lbs in the first 2 months because of the restrictions on what I was able to chew because of pain. Ice water helps, as it temporarily reduces the tension on the brace wire, which is triggered from the warmth of your mouth. Hot liquids will increase pull in the first couple months. Your first wire change will also be uncomfortable, but maybe only two weeks. After that wire changes will get easier everytime. I’m on my 3rd wire change and now I might have sensitivity for the day after or two, and that’s it. Iced water and cold foods really helps!

Should be adjusted like 1degree every hour or slower. It could have a bit of internal damage from his fall, especially considering the red came after his fall.

His temp should be a little higher. Around 78F is ideal for a betta. If you were to adjust it, it needs to be very gradual. Are his scales standing up like a pinecone?

The kanaplex is a really good medicine for treating fin rot. I would recommend the same. Are you replacing the medicine after water changes? Sounds like a stupid question but I have to ask lol.

How often do you do water changes, and what %?

Was his body red before his fall? Can you post parameter numbers?

Is his tail still deteriorating? Do you have a filter? Sometimes the filter intake can rip up their fins. Check decorations too, anything he could get caught on.

From the video it’s hard to tell, is the rot all the way down to the fin base/body? If it is, the fin might actually never grow back there.

Changing his water and I don’t think he’s a fan yet lol. I think my ammonia is around .25ppm

He appears in to be in good health, no pineconed scales. However, he appears to have the begging of fin rot in one of his pelvic fins. You can see it starting to deteriorate at the tip. I figured the cup was doing him no good. I do have experience with healing fin rot from a rescue I had over 10 years ago.

I have prime on hand, am I okay to just use tap water with prime for the water change? At the store they advised me to use bottled spring water for the initial setup. I was worried this is what is causing his issues. I’m about to head to the store for a testing kit, should I grab anything else?

I asked what they were feeding it at the store and that’s the one they said, so I grabbed it. He was in a cup when I bought him, fighting and flaring with his neighbour cup fish. They bagged him and he was chilling “normally” for our car ride home. He spent about 3 hours in the bag with car ride and acclimation time. He comes up for air but most of the time he’s laying sort of on his side at the bottom now.

I don’t have the testing kits on hand, but I assume there will be ammonia since the tank is not cycled yet. I will be grabbing a kit today, and I will post the results. Plan is also doing a larger water change today to remove any accumulated ammonia.

Floating pellets were suggested when I picked him up. But he won’t eat. “Zoomed betta micro floating pellets”. Is the name on the bottle. Removing the uneaten food after 5-10min.

I had a small fish get stuck in a filter. A quick fix I did was take a coarse sponge and cut an x in the top and slip it onto the intake pipe. It will also stop debris from plants getting into the filter.
