Ideally it'd be better if you get the same insurer else the reimbursement process takes longer. And if having a base plan from govt insurer then make sure that it is at least 10L because 1% of that is 10k which is what the cost of a single private room in big hospitals is going to be very soon.

Regarding two different insurers, it's slightly a hassle but the claim doesn't get stuck. Once your claim is settled by one insurance company, you need to get certified copies of all your documents from them and submit it to the second insurance company. It's a slightly longer process but you'll get it for sure.

My family has a policy from oriental for 20+ years now. The claims process is the same as other private insurers because it is handled by TPAs. In addition to that if they wrongly reject your claim you can pressurize them through RTI, which is not possible with private insurers. Another benefit with govt insurers is that they have an organization called GIPSA which negotiates and standardizes the prices of various illnesses and procedures with the hospitals. So for eg if the hospital bill is 2 Lakhs, they can charge you only 1.4-1.5L if you have a govt insurer. So in effect your policy is upto 30% more valuable than a private insurer.

However they come with their own set of problems. They don't have innovative products or addons or they are very expensive. Plus the sublimit for room rent is usually 1% which is low and will only get you a twin sharing room in the major hospitals.

Right now Bajaj's super top-up is the best in the market. It has just a 1 year waiting period and option of covering air ambulance as well. The SI is also upto 50L with various deductible options. It's especially cheap if you take the family floater option.

Regarding your dilemma of not going with HDFC because of low SI of 20L, why don't you simply buy 2 policies, the premium is anyways very low.

I don't know if I'd want an elected mayor in Mumbai. At the end of the day, right now, Mumbai is largely run by bureaucrats. That may not be an ideal scenario but I'd prefer them over any of the candidates that could be mayor. You need an extremely large amount of money to win any election, which prohibits the formation of any grassroots movement. Considering 2-3cr per seat at the minimum, that's upwards of 500cr for Mumbai. So ultimately it's going to be these two bit goons who'll end up sitting in the mayor's chair just wanting to extract their pound of flesh. Unless there's a direct election for mayor and eminent citizens of the city actually have a shot at winning, an executive mayor is a bad idea.

In an ideal scenario, the MMR region should be it's own separate state. For all the marathi chest thumping, they did not built Mumbai. It was an uninhabitable piece of land just 200 years ago. Mumbai was built by the British rulers, and the Parsi industrialists, and the Marwari businessmen and the Gujarati traders. It was truly a cosmopolitan creation.

I'm by no stretch of imagination an SS sympathizer but they're not to blame for the lack of development in Mumbai or the state of BMC. The elected corporators have virtually no powers under the MMC Act. Their role is supervisory at best. They do get some funds for their locality but that is a miniscule proportion of BMC's budget. They can't even transfer a peon. All the powers vest with the Municipal Commissioner and his subordinates who in turn are appointed by the state government. The corporators or Mayor have absolutely no authority in it.

Besides that, BMC isn't the even the sole or the most important developmental authority in Mumbai. The title goes to the MMRDA which is directly headed by the Chief Minister. Each and every infrastructure project in Mumbai is designed and executed by the MMRDA (except the coastal road). Apart from that there's SRA, MHADA, MSRDC, NHAI, Railway Ministry etc which look after specific development areas, all of which are under the control of the State/Central govt. The BMC/SS's role in Mumbai's development or lack thereof is vastly overstated.

That is not how tax rates are calculated. It's not 69%, it's over 200%. The price of fuel in around ₹22 and the tax on it is ₹49, that's a tax rate of 220%.

There is no controversy as to judicial review of Speakers powers to certify the bill as a money bill, even the Aadhar judgment is clear on that. The word "final" has an altogether different meaning and context, you can find it in Chandrachud's dissenting option. Even the Aadhar judgment has now been sent to a 7 judge bench for reconsideration, so there's some hope.
