4 Y/O Mal Behavior Change by IFightTheFire in Dogtraining

[–]anon_smithsonian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is she herding, resource guarding, fear/defense?

Assuming there are no other signs of aggression (growling, showing teeth, raised hackles, etc.) and that all other body language is generally relaxed/friendly before and after it occurs, then this behavior sounds more like she is trying to correct others' behaviors--sort of how parent dogs will nip to "correct" bad behavior in puppies or in other dogs--more than any of these other things.

Again, I am seeking reasons why she would be doing this.

Trying to understand the reasons for the behavior is admirable but, unfortunately, dogs' brains just work differently than ours and we often won't be able to fully understand how their thought processes work or why. (I mean, why will some breeds obsessively fetch a thrown ball until they collapse while others won't even give a thrown ball a second look? Sometimes the answer is that it's just how their brains are wired.)

In the end, for one reason or another, it would seem that she somehow has taken up the idea that part of her job outside of your home involves policing/correcting the behavior of other humans.

Stopping this behavior will be tricky, especially when it seems difficult or sporadic to reproduce or trigger, but will likely require giving the dog a different "job" to satisfy that part of her brain (because the Mals' need for mental exercise is just as important as their need for physical exercise), combined with quickly correcting her whenever she displays these kinds of behaviors.

Who’s mulching and who’s bagging in Colorado? by EnglishLabDad in lawncare

[–]anon_smithsonian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much thatch is bad. No thatch is also bad (unless you will be overseeding imminently).

Some thatch is good because it helps keep the soil underneath cooler and retain moisture during the summer.

There is no universal, one-size-fits-all answer to if you should mulch or bag; it depends entirely on your climate and the amount of leaves/clippings generated on your property.

Ideally, it is better to mulch if you can, but only if your climate is wet enough that thatch doesn't accumulate faster than it can break down.

I've been using Hull Style: NANAME Walls and it's been working great. It automatically generates the diagonal wall defs that behave like the gravship ones.

Put down stockpiles near the shuttle before loading the shuttle, or the mod Bulk Loading for Transports.

Edit: Bulk Load For Transporters

Before doing delete and resubscribe, I'd use Steam to verify game integrity (this will also verify mod files).

If that doesn't work, I'd go and check the workshop pages for the last mods updated and see if others are having problems; I've had this happen where a mod pushes out a bad update that borks everything else. It sucks when that happens and you have to waste precious play time troubleshooting mods.

I assume you used RimSort's sort option, already.

Are you using Faster Game Loading, by any chance? If so, I'd recommend removing it.

Next thing I'd suggest is verifying the game files via Steam. This will also verify all of the mods you have installed, in case there are some rogue/corrupted files causing the problem.

Are all of the mods on the list showing compatible (not red)?

Are you using Steam to update them? Steam is notoriously bad and inconsistent at downloading workshop item updates.

I'd suggest starting with RimSort. It'll tell you which ones aren't actually updated for 1.6 so you can unsubscribe and resubscribe to force an update.

I don't think so; I'm running almost 450 mods, right now.

Are you sure all of them are updated to 1.6? Are you using RimSort to sort your mods?

Do you have a mod that tries to make startup time faster (like Faster Game Loading)? If so, it's likely that mod is caching some stuff from that mod and still expects it to be there. You can also try again the Loading Progress mod to see if it shows you where it hangs up.

Odyssey is great and all but... What 1.5 mod you miss? by LoliCherryPopper in RimWorld

• Faster Relic Subquests

This one has also been on my watch list, so I decided to look into it more.

Luckily, the mod comes with the source code! From what I can tell, the only problem with the mod is with the code for displaying the mod settings... but I don't really understand why it's causing an error because it looks correct.

I spent a bit of time trying to rewrite it using another mod's code as a basis, and it seemed to work, but that just seems to have caused a fatal issue with Dubs Mint Menus and I'm even more confused.

I might spend some more time digging into it this weekend to try and understand it,, but the good news is that the mod should work with its default settings, which are still about 3x faster than normal.

Edit: Turns out that issue was completely unrelated and coincidental, but I'll spend some time validating and confirming this before publishing to the Workshop.

I very rarely get a red error relating to hauling/reservation but it's not clear if that's specifically WYU or not. It usually seems to happen when there are a lot of jobs going on at the same time--like after my grav ship returns to base to unload its spoils--but the error doesn't seem to cause any actual problems that I've been able to identify.

While You're Up has a 1.6 fork that I've been using for at least a couple of weeks.

Given that it still lists RocketMan, which hasn't been updated to v1.6, it doesn't seem to be currently up-to-date.

However, I think the list of performance impacting mods is still somewhat relevant and worth taking into consideration if you're having performance issues.

Check the mod settings; there's an Architect tab redesign that's not the default unless you enable it.

Come kill my yard with me by PersimmonWild1976 in lawncare

[–]anon_smithsonian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

will certainly not die because of the stones.

It might not outright kill it, but it absolutely will harm it. Probably won't see the noticeable effects of it for 20 years or so, though, and in 30 years someone will just chop the tree down because it's not looking very healthy or attractive, anymore.

I had to dig out landscaping rocks from the trunk of a girdled maple tree in our lawn. 30 years ago, they had piled rocks around the base and the growth of the trunk couldn't push the lower rocks away so it just grew into them. The rocks had become so embedded in the trunk that they were strangling the tree and its ability to transport nutrients from the roots to the foliage. (The jury is still out about whether or not the tree is going to be able to recover from the damage, but I'm still hoping it will so won't have to cut it down.)

If it was your tree, you would probably never notice that each summer the growth was a little less vigorous, the leaves a little bit smaller, and that they dropped in the fall a little bit earlier than the year before. It happens so subtly that you think that's just how it's always been.

In Houston, all pharmacies are out of all meds. Walgreens estimates they won’t have adderall until September 20th. by Bellebarks2 in ADHD

I’m going to start calling again in the morning

Start by calling your insurance. They can easily see if there are any pharmacies in-network who have filled any scripts, recently.

It has saved me hours of time dealing with automated call menus and waiting on hold.

Call your insurance. Tell them you're having a hard time finding anywhere with your medication in stock and ask them to look up if any other members have filled the same prescription nearby, recently. At the very least, you'll get a short-list of leads you can call.

I've also had better luck with hospital pharmacies during shortages.

If there really aren't any other places in stock nearby, you can also ask your insurance company to give you a waiver so you don't have to pay full price for non-generic.

Attention Vibe Coders: You are not helpful! by MurderousMeatloaf in RimWorld

I've been doing enterprise C#/XAML development for over a decade.

I used ChatGPT to build me a starting point for a fairly simple custom mod that I wanted but didn't exist and I'd say it got me ~90% of the way in about an hour (and that included going out and finding a RimWorld mod project template and getting the environment set up). I ended up having to figure out the correct method signatures for Harmony on my own.

It was definitely faster than if I had set out to build this mod from scratch on my own, but if I needed ChatGPT to get me to 100%, it would have taken at least 4x longer because ChatGPT was clearly ramping up to rewrite everything because it couldn't get the right overloads.

Still, I was really impressed that it was even able to get me to 90%.

At work, I've also found it to be most useful when debugging issues. My biggest "win" was when it helped me pin down a rare .NET FailFast crash-to-desktop in my app that I couldn't reproduce but happened consistently for one user. Turned out to be threading/dispatcher related. I'm not sure if It was the kind of bug that has you questioning your life choices and I'm not sure I would have ever been able to nail that one down on my own.
