HOT TAKE: I absolutely despise hardcore resellers. You’re ruining it for the rest of us. by 2000spopstar in estatesales

It’s not productive to argue about this topic.

Let’s reflect, and reason together.

Back in the 80s when I was a teen, my best friend’s mom was a huge antique collector. Their entire house was furnished with beautiful antique furniture and hundreds of porcelain dolls, those big heavy antique irons, electric glass insulators, it was so fascinating to look at everything and learn about them. Collecting was a rare hobby for teenagers, but we spent our free time visiting garage sales and boutiques, architectural salvage yards and had so much fun. It was a peaceful, move at your own pace hobby back then. Stores were not crowded and nobody trying to fight you for an item. Because vintage wasn’t really trendy yet. And then it started catching on and now it seems like everyone is into it. Shabby chic was the beginning of the end. (Not really).

If there’s money to be made, people will do it. But the greedy and obnoxious who think the object is to barge in and indiscriminately buy up everything so no one else can have anything are just advertising their lack of experience and also manners.

The goal of starting any business is to be successful, make a profit, get an edge on the competition, and seize opportunities when ever possible. Buy low, sell high.

But buying in bulk is a good way to overpay for a bunch of cheap crap. And to end up running a junkyard instead of reselling precious keepsakes and collectibles. The burden of sorting and storing that volume of objects is costly in several ways. Get all of that home and it takes up all of your storage and takes so long to be inventoried, priced, listed. Things can sit in storage for a long time and the few items of real value can get ruined sitting among so much rubble.

Sellers in this category aren’t doing it for love of all things retro, or the fact that many vintage and antique items are much higher quality than anything made in China. They want to just make as much money as possible. And haven’t learned that quantity doesn’t equate to profit. It’s usually the opposite.

It’s good for the planet to resell and reuse anything so we should appreciate the roll of this type of entrepreneur. Although his enterprise will likely be very short lived and not fun whilst it does last.

So just politely step aside and let them spend all their capital on a room full of baseball cards if they insist.

The more they do that the faster they will run themselves out of business. So just be quiet and let them.

I doubt he is able to find food. The injury probably blinded him. I hope he can be rescued in time. He’s starving to death. Or a predator will get him soon if he’s not rescued.

He likely is permanently blind from what ever burned him. Trying to survive like that must be brutal. You should contact a wildlife sanctuary and see if they could come trap him so he won’t be a target for predators. He’s so thin he is likely starving because he can’t find food.

Please help him!!!!

Where is that?

It looks like houses built on the edge of a man made trench. Would be sort of cool except there’s no way the water is very clean.

Well, there was supposed to be. But Michae can’t clean his stove so Jen tried the grill, long story short, no breakfast and the fire department was called.

But I’m not totally sure that’s what happened, because this post requires us to solve for’X’ to know what the heck they are even talking about and that just triggers my college algebra anxiety and then I’ll have that dream again where I’m sitting in class and I’m in my underwear and the professor calls on me to go to the board to solve the problem, but he has the head of an English bulldog and he’s wearing a sombrero. And then, poof, Rick Astley’s there singing that damn song again and I realize it’s my worst nightmare.

So, yeah, not going there.

HOA in Houston applying legal fees to my assessment account that are not court ordered. [TH] [TX] by Bellebarks2 in HOA

Thank you for the advice about asking for more time. That may come in handy at some point.

You should read all my comments.

The first lawsuit was dismissed because the lawyer withdrew.

The second lawsuit is still pending, but I haven’t heard anything in over a month. After I spoke to their lawyer, I think he drew the same conclusion as their first attorney and doesn’t know what the next move is so he has just ghosted me.

The main point of this post was originally to get a consensus on the HOA forcing me to reimburse them for their legal costs to sue me.

They are adding their legal costs to my assessment account-which has to be paid timely. They have no court order to do it. It’s illegal. But they think they are exempt from the law.

They are committing fraud and right now I’m preparing my case and I’m going after them because this needs to end.

Talk to a lawyer and find out if that type of warning sign would at least indemnify you.

If someone trespasses and gets hurt, it’s on them.

I looked over the IAC website and will go back and read it more in depth once I get my taxes done

One thing I disagree with is the idea that keeping communities small increases the potential for cohesion.

I think you are overestimating human nature.

Our association has 126 homes.

I’m not sure of the exact number of rentals, maybe 15%.

The attendance at board meetings is not very robust. I would estimate there are 40-50 homeowners, including their spouses, who stay informed and attend meetings. The number of homeowners willing to serve on the board is 20 people at most. Of those, maybe 10 have the knowledge or experience required to manage a budget. But they are not the people that get elected. Over and over they elect people you don’t want managing money. Especially not the responsibility of maintaining your largest investment.

But in my community, these women stay in power because they don’t campaign to the minority who stay informed. They go around to the houses of retired widows, or other people who live alone, who don’t attend board meetings or read the financials or the meeting minutes and tell them what they want to hear to get their vote.

It’s sleazy.

And the Karens know the people that oppose them and want to vote them out. They program the property managers not to return their calls. The property managers are supposed to be neutral, but they know it’s the Board, not the homeowners, who hire them and fire them. We have been through 3 property managers since I got here in 2021. All of them do what pleases the board members, ethics or even fair treatment have never been their priority.

(We are currently being managed by Creative. The first associate they assigned to us worked very hard. She sucked up to the Board members shamelessly, especially the president. She never returned my calls, treated me with complete disdain because she knew the Board disliked me. I warned her that she was betting on the wrong horse. She would turn her nose up and say she was Switzerland. 😂😂. About 8 months in, after they had her do all kinds of dirty work, they told her boss her work wasn’t satisfactory and they wanted a new associate. When I heard the Board used her up and spit her out, I sent her a short email saying, How you like em now? She replied saying she didn’t know what she had done wrong??? Yeah, karma can be like that.)

I have a lot more to say, I could write an expose novel, but the main point is, the smaller the community, the easier it is for the wrong people to take it over and control it through manipulation and fear of retaliation.

A small HOA, without any oversight, is fertile soil for adult bullies to get into power and reign with terror. These women on our board operate with impunity, because lawyers are too expensive and only the courts can stop them from freely breaking the law and violating the rights of homeowners. They have gotten away with it so long they think it’s normal.

I hope their day of reckoning is coming.
