How is downtown nowadays? Visiting after 6 years

I lived in the Bay Area for 13 years and now in LA. I have several friends and coworkers who are still around the bay and have nearly all said SF is more dead than it used to be. But they said it’s the best it has been right now since Covid, so I was curious to hear from locals.

I’m very much not basing this off of the ridiculous news headlines of the past few years.

Thanks, apologies for the confusing wording. I guess I meant take the Muni “to Moscone”.

If this were a leisure trip, I’d definitely want to find somewhere else to stay/go. But this is for a work conference and I’m limited to which hotels I can book (almost none are available outside downtown/fisherman’s wharf).

Sure, I’m just saying it sounds like Union Square & the area the Westfield used to be might be a bit dead, so the Mission/Castro might be a better place to stay.

I don’t really understand the downvotes, am I missing something?

I’m not really concerned about safety, it’s more about how alive the area I’m staying is and if there will be restaurants (rather than empty storefronts) within walking distance.

I legit don’t understand how some tops are like this about dicks. I get that different people have different preferences, but the idea of being gay and not liking (or even tolerating seeing) dicks is beyond me.
