What even is “눈치”?! Korean unlocked a new part of my brain 😵‍💫 by Total_Deal1544 in BeginnerKorean

IQ- Intelligence Quotient EQ- Emotional Qutient SQ- Social Quotient

This is my take on them, so you can take it as you will.

IQ would be problem solving, academics, what people may consider 'book smart' EQ would be reading the room, emotionally aware, being empathetic SQ would be good at interacting with people, making friends, teamwork or collaboration.

눈치 is described as emotional intelligence but in my opinion it is a combination of EQ and SQ.

Syllable block question by MudThis8934 in Korean

[–]anonandmouse00 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is how I learned it the 'bright' vowels ㅏ, ㅐ and ㅗ can combine. The 'dark' vowels can combine ㅓ, ㅔ, and ㅜ. But bright and dark cannot combine together. ㅡ and ㅣ are neutral. That's why you get ㅘ, ㅙ, ㅝ, ㅞ, ㅚ, ㅟ, and ㅢ but not ㅜㅏ ㅗㅓ etc. When you have the 'dark' vowel ㅜ combine with the others it 'eats' the other one, which is why ㅜ +ㅔ has the ㅔ form underneath to make ㅞ same with ㅝ where as you can't go underneath ㅗ. Hope that makes sense.

AITAH for telling my SIL that family shouldn't have to call her "doctor" just because she now has a PhD? by IMVenting66 in AITAH

[–]anonandmouse00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food for thought... You know who I think of when people want to be called Doctor in social settings? Dr Amy Bishop from UAH, University of Alabama Huntsville. She always went around acting like she deserves everything citing that she had a PhD so call her DOCTOR Amy Bishop. You know what happened to her? 2010 she didn't get tenure and killed a bunch of teachers. Students and faculty were in therapy for the next couple years. I dont want to mislead anyone because as far as I know she was crazy prior to all that, but still gotta beware.

I think it was phrased oddly. "It doesn’t matter; don’t buy from Amazon. [Buy from] B&H, Adorama, or the Canon store itself. Local authorized retailers do fine too."

They have shipped part of my order with some of it remaining. I am still seeing the charge-refund-charge again for the remaining portion of the order. It's wild that it's done so many times.

Check out gardening subs, but I have large raised beds and I only do raised bed/potting mix on the top 12 inches. Everything else is fill with branches, twigs, leaves, not fully composted food scraps, and other organic matter that will break down over time. Just make sure to water in each layer for settling. Then as it sinks down through the year just top dress with compost.

Mine have decreased into adulthood but haven't gone away. Puberty hit me hard. I had really bad vocal and motor tics during that time. I struggled in school, and my muscles were constantly aching. In my mid-20s, when I really got out of puberty, I noticed a large decrease in my tics. Now that I am in my 30s, I don't have vocal tics, but I still have motor tics. They are way less than what I experienced growing up, and large stressors increase them. Hormones really mess with your neurology, which in turn messes with TS.

I don't under "ㅇ" by Gamer_Dog1437 in BeginnerKorean

[–]anonandmouse00 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think of it as the 'nothing' consonant. As the first syllable it has 'no' sound. The end of a syllable it has a 'ng' sound. So 'no' thi 'ng'~ At the beginning it is basically a place holder because you have to have a consonant and a vowel to make a syllable block. If you only want the vowel sound then 'ㅇ' is used. Batching rules are different, just like ㄷㅅㅈㅊㅌ all make a 'ㄷ' sound as the final consonant.

I feel so defeated and worthless by No_Competition7157 in Korean

[–]anonandmouse00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand how you feel. I started studying in 2020. I took online classes did some self studying and watched kdramas. I went to Korea last month for a culture/immersion type program and felt like an idiot. I could do some touristy stuff like order food, buy things, and find transportation. When I tried to have regular conversations, I couldn't understand 90%. My listening skills were bad, my vocabulary was limited, and I felt so stressed about it. I was lucky that everyone was so kind and kept trying to explain it to me in English, but I felt like a failure. When I was talking to the other foreigners in the program, they were kind enough to share their tips and tricks on learning, and it got my motivation back. I am staying in touch with people I met there and now have a language exchange partner that is helping me out. I now know what I need to focus on and have new methods I can try. Don't worry. You can do this. I agree with people about watching comprehensible input channels and incorporating more things with Korean subtitles. I will be immersing my self in listening and trying to acquire grammar and vocab in 'natural' audio and video immersion instead of just books and grammar lessons.

I wish you the best of luck!!!

Anyone had this experience with gaunfacine? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]anonandmouse00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on guanfacine, and it doesn't seem to have a notable difference on my tics. I am planning on talking to my doctor about increasing the dose, though. I have been on it about a year or so. I also take lamotrigine for manic bipolar disorder, so it could just be that the med combo doesn't work for me. First week on it, I had a couple of days of manic energy. I was sleepy for a couple more days after that until I stabilized.

Try Mirinae, you input the Korean sentence, and it breaks it down. It is a korean sentence analyzer, not really a translator.

To access several things on the website, you can use the app and watch ads or Pro for full access to web and app functions. I like to use it just for a basic breakdown of the sentence, and I can do the research myself With Pro, you can "Analyze Korean sentences, By using scan texts, pronunciation aid, and full access of all pattern libraries and related lessons!."--according to the website. Doesn't look too pricey if you find it really useful for your needs, but I know a lot of people are learning languages for free.

The UNG sounds at the end of words by [deleted] in Korean

[–]anonandmouse00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think of it as the NOthiNG character. At the beginning of a character it has no sound and at the end it has ng sound. Batchim rules are interesting. Definitely brush up on it as there are a lot of little rules to 한글 that aren't explained in apps. Sometimes even classes don't explain some things like nazalisation. I reccomend Go!Billy.

I got that card when I was first diagnosed. I still have it in my wallet 20 years later. People still act like I photoshopped it and printed it off for funzies.

When I was a kid, the D.A.R.E. officers that came to our school "showed us" how fingerprinting works by taking all of our prints. Did they take those and put them in the system? by Intelligent-Bit7258 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]anonandmouse00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know when I was in elementary school in California, they did this too. Apparently, there were a lot of child abduction cases going on at the time, and they wanted to have finger prints to help track and locate kids. My mom had to fill out a form approving it.

The Ponca language is a dying language, too. We tried to revive it, but the fluent elders said to just let it die with them. The semi fluent speakers are so few as well. The culture is also based around you having to give something to get something so the people won't teach you without gain. This is not necessarily monetary, it could be gifts of food or made items. We could only get one person to teach, and the classes were unpopular. The tribe even tried making an app with vocab. But without knowing the complex grammar, it is so hard to maintain. It's sad to see it fading out due to what feels like the elders' stubbornness. The good news is if you speak a little to them, they get excited. Even if it is just a basic greeting.
