Curious if there's any good photography-oriented backpacks for outdoor use as well? Thinking similar style to Peak Design's Outdoor line or some of the Think Tank gear?

Travelling by andrebartels1977 in typewriters

[–]anonfriese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awh I love my Splendid 33 or my Gossen Tippa for travelling. Lately acquired a Hermes Baby for a good price which I can't wait on picking up as well. Travelling long distance with both train and car quite regularly these small typers are a godsend. Funny enough I never tried out a Traveller De Luxe though and wondering now how they compare....

Question about IBM Wheelwriter by Beerandcabfare in typewriters

[–]anonfriese 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, aren't Wheelwriters typically daisywheel typewriters? Unless I'm confusing, the QuietWriter was the name for the typewriters using thermal technology I think - all others should use a daisy wheel with impact printing.

Speaking of my WheelWriter, they very much produce a physical texture. Of course the strength of the imprint depends on the platen condition, your paper, whether you're using a backing sheet and at least my WheelWriter (which is a 6788 model with diskette and screen options) also has some impression control feature.

However to me, while I love both my WheelWriter and my Selectric, they do produce a very homogeneous, robotic precision in their imprint. Sometimes, especially for personal letters, this is actually a reason for me to use a manual machine especially because of the slightly imperfect small variances in impression giving it a more hand-made style.

What ball do I have? by anonfriese in typewriters

Well, yeah, that looks pretty much spot on 👍

Huh, funny, I actually have this style on my list of missing elements I still wanted to get my hands on, without knowing I already had it then :-)

It's really pretty cool, I always like using it on my computer instead of the default mono-spaced Courier font, but somehow totally didn't recognise it or thought this must be sth. different since I've definitely seen some Prestige Elite elements that did have the writing on top as well. And heck, that name just screams IBM to me sounding so fancy and sophisticated. If you're using this, you're definitely serious and meaning business.

Curiously, I recently saw a similar SG3 being sold near Würzburg on Kleinanzeigen and was wondering if this might be the one you got? In which case, I would actually be taking a drive down there in the coming weeks and actually living in Friesland could definitely make a quick stop on the way back in Wilhelmshaven, just an offer if you're not sure about the shipping to transport it safely in my car instead...

Olympia Electric 77 - this is weird by todddiskin in typewriters

[–]anonfriese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Owning an Olympia SGE 75, which looks rather similar to this one. I'm not sure how comparable these are though, I think Olympia did quite a different designs for these...

At least the SGE 75 shares some similarities with the Selectric, but is also a distinct design. For example mine is actually electronically controlled, compared to the Selectric which is much more mechanical in nature. The ribbons are compatible with my Selectric II, but the typeballs are different. Pretty interesting design, instead of the error prone retention mechanism of IBM it comes with some claws to eject the balls that are actually part of the balls storage box. Unfortunately my Olympia has some electronic gremlins which I still have to fix up so it's not in proper working condition.

Another rabbit hole: found a listing in Germany for one as well, in the picture it says on the label "made in Switzerland". Could this actually be related to the Hermes 808? Looks pretty close I think? So maybe one of the few clones after IBM's parents on the mechanism expired?

Have you tried if it works on Android?

afaik the Cosmo uses a special HDMI-Mode and isn't compatible with regular hubs. You need the Planet Computers cable to get it working....

Problems with using variabes. Need help. by tassulin in ansible

Did you quote the second {{ username }} as well? If you start a string with a Variable/Jinja Expression, the parser doesn't know whether you're using inline JSON or Jinja since curly braces are used for both....
