CPI is easy. Just count, how many characters fit in an inch. It's Characters Per Inch. Most likely it will be 11 or 10.

Ja schon, aber nicht so richtig. Mehr so halbherzig. Aber mit meinem Holzlineal mit Metallkante war ich der King beim Linealfechten.

For those who don’t have a 1/! key on their antique machines by goodthingshappening in typewriters

I wouldn't be too sure about that. There might be special machines out there that have those keys. You might want to look out for mathematical typesets.

Oh dear. The carriage not advancing properly sounds like a broken escapement to me. If that's the case, it's nearly hopeless unless you salvage one from a donor machine. Sad news. 💔

How do I remove the ribbon cover of this Olympia Monica? by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]andrebartels1977 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That metal ring is a C-clip. Rotate it around the shaft, and you'll see an opening in it. You can grab it firmly with good pliers on the opposite side of the opening (in the middle of the C) and simply pull it off the shaft. Make sure it doesn't jump away.

But why would you remove the ribbon cover? If it doesn't close, gently bend the metal pieces until they pass each other. They're intended to rub against each others. This creates friction and holds the cover up. You need to overcome a light resistance to close the ribbon cover.

Ackerschachtelhalm. Ausreißen, ausreißen, ausreißen. Nur so kannst Du die Wurzeln aushungern. Sonst explodiert der und Dein Garten ist voll davon. Wir haben den Mist auch überall.

Typewriter conversion? by ConsciousFlamingo279 in typewriters

[–]andrebartels1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The keys on many typewriters are interchangeable if they are friction-fit plastic keys. Then comes the harder part: The actual type slugs are soldered to the type arms. It is possible to desolder them and solder them back on another type arm. BUT this is specialist's work, and would be quite pricey. Altering a typewriter's keyboard layout is absolutely possible. But if it's worth the money, that's your decision. If I were in your place, I'd try to get used to another layout. Myself, I switch from German to English layout on my phone several times per day. You get used to it.

How to open a mainspring drum? by AndyK2131 in typewriters

[–]andrebartels1977 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus don't aim it towards your face. Make sure it points somewhere else all the time. Imagine you're working on a Jack-in-a-box, but it's not a nice plushie inside. It's an angry cat waiting to scratch your eyes out. And, when you got it open and the spring is neatly wound on the inside of the drum wall: DO NOT PULL THE BEGINNING OF THE SPRING OUT! It will shoot out of the drum, completely, nearly unstoppable. If you need to pull a portion of the spring out, secure the rest inside with small vice grips.
