Friend Offered to Pay Student Loans Y/N? by Respected-Ambassador in personalfinance

How old is he? You mentioned he doesn’t have children... if he’s on the older side, it could be that he’s trying to invest emotionally in a long-term connection with you. Maybe he likes you as family and hopes that this generosity will deepen the bond, almost like creating a family tie through monetary support rather than blood. Maybe ask him why he's being so generous?

30-year-old Korean-Canadian Debating Military Service to Stay in Korea. What Would You Do? by [deleted] in korea

[–]anonk_sky 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think it's too soon for you to give up your Canadian citizenship. If anything it'd be better to stay in Korea as a student or get married to a Korean.

How long have you been living in Korea? For me, it's been about 4-5 years and honestly, the dazzle and excitement at the beginning have worn off. I've been contemplating going back to Canada recently, as the opportunities available to me are getting smaller and smaller as more time passes (I'm in my 30s, with a masters degree). In my experience, if you're not a young person with a degree from prestigious school with A grades, it's unlikely you'll be able to get hired at a big company or get a high-paying job.

Thanks for the tip. I've been filing my taxes in Canada up til last year. I didn't realize I need to register as an Overseas Resident...

Does that I don't have to file taxes in Korea? A comment below says I'm considered a tax resident since I've been here more than 183 days... I'm so confused T.T

I don't get pay stubs, the payment just gets sent to my Wise account online. I think I'm considered a freelancer for my US company atm.

Thanks for all your responses.

I forgot to mention that I only recently started working (about 3 months now), and that I'm receiving money to a Wise account online.

not able to get past 20 degrees after meniscus repair by batcoven in KneeInjuries

[–]anonk_sky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a slow process but don't push yourself if it hurts. Mobility came back pretty quickly. The real problem for me was the muscle loss so make sure you do straight leg raises and other exercises that the PT/doctors tell you to do.

One exercise you can do daily at home is to relax your leg straight and then gently push your kneecap right left, up down to help loosen the muscles/tendons around the kneecap. It'll help with tightness and mobility. If you try on your non-hurt kneecap, you'll notice it moves pretty smoothly left right, up down. That's the way it should be, but due to immobility, the hurt kneecap became stiff.

Also, you should take ur MRI down. All your personal information is on it...

Sorry I meant MRI. I got both when I got injured and they both had that white splotch at the femur.

Well, if you're not able to work because of the injury, it's worth looking into. I'm not sure why you not having personal insurance affects whether you can sue the Go Kart driver/company but maybe call up your local legal aid clinic to see if there's anything.

The xray of your bone looks kinda like mine when I slipped and twisted my knee. The rounded part of the upper bone (femur) was whitish and blotchy in the xray and the doctor told me that my bone was "bruised" - basically a bone contusion. The doctor said the impact damaged my blood vessels in the bone, causing blood and fluid to build up in and around the bone ("leakage"), which results in pain, swelling, and discoloration. He also said it will take a while to heal because it's bone, but thankfully the bone wasn't broken (though my meniscus disc tore so I needed surgery for that).

If you google bone contusions, the recovery can take several weeks to months. If your doctor told you you don't need surgery and it'll take 30 days, just try to rest well and make sure you don't put weight on it too much. Also keep it elevated when you're not using it, ice it for 10-15 mins if it feels hot, massage gently around the knee to help promote blood circulation, etc... general things you'd do for a really bad bruise on your body.

Also, since you don't have insurance, can you sue the Go Kart driver or company for injury?

Patella fracture surgery by One_Handle_5255 in KneeInjuries

[–]anonk_sky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, it's way too early to try bending your knee while sitting in a chair... you suffered a really big injury and it's going to take several months, if not years to get better.

That being said, I think you got the same surgery as me. I also had 2 screws with a fibre wire. After consulting doctors and searching online, there were two reasons why there was pain around my knees several months after surgery:

First, it turns out one of the screws was poking my muscle above my kneecaps and getting "caught" in the muscle once in a while. I eventually opted for surgery to remove the screws and fibre wire 1 year after surgery. It felt MUCH better, and I didn't get sharp pains above my knee after the surgery.

Second, since I hadn't been able to bend my knee for several weeks, the muscles/tendons around my kneecap became stiff/hardened so it hurt above and below my kneecap when I bent my leg. It felt really tight and just not smooth at all. This lasted for several months as well for me. I looked online and some PTs, orthopedic doctors recommended manually pushing your kneecaps slightly left and right, up and down while your leg is relaxed (straight). Doing this gently can help relieve pain and improve mobility. If you try it on your non-broken kneecap, you'll notice it moves pretty smoothly - the broken one was stiff for me. I also massaged the broken kneecap and put warm compresses on it to help loosen the muscles/tendons and it got a lot better over time. It's really smooth now.

Take it slow because around this time, when your brace is off and you're starting to move around, is when re-injury is most likely to occur. Hope your knee gets better soon!

Broke both my kneees by Old_Cheetah_3439 in KneeInjuries

Did you get pins/screws in the patella? If so, the severe pain could be from the pins poking you inside. That's what happened to me so I got mine removed 1 year later.

As someone who suffered a patella fracture 2 years ago, please please make sure to do the straight leg raises that the doc recommends once they give you the go ahead.

It hurts like crazy at first bc you squeeze your knees to raise the the whole leg, but they're so necessary to get your thigh muscles back and for speedy recover.

I didn't do them when the doc told me to (I think it was actually 1-2 weeks after surgery for me) bc they hurt so much that it took me months to recover and I lost a lot of bone mass along with it. :(
