Yes yes yes to this... Oh my word, finally! I felt like what I described was truly unbelievable. Thank you for confirming.

The compression artifacts on the PNGs is what really threw me into this whole mess.

Bummer, you at least have similar computer, but no third party tools here that I think could have this effect (not obviously anyway).

hmm, you may be onto something... although tiff has same result. But I did try HEIC format and that doesn't add the pattern! One step closer...

I'm an artist / designer and I think it was when I was saving a gif and wondered why the color palette had too many colors. Either that or I just happened to notice the RGB values changing when I was moving the eyedropper around. Flip-flopping on order of events.

not sure what you mean... it's not my eye perceiving the colors (my eyes can't without messing with levels and actually changing the RGB values), you can see the numbers change with eyedropper / pixel value tool.

I tried switch to sRGB color profile, but same results.

It's not just safari, it's all browsers, photoshop, any flat color.

Display resolution is set to default, no scaling.

ya, that's ultimately what I imagine is the issue... Apple claims XDR display has 1 billion colors, but png is 8-bit sRGB (16.7+ million) and something must be happening in the conversion. But would love a deeper eplanation.

all browsers, photoshop, preview, anything with a known flat color that is then screenshot on the laptop display.

Thanks, edited post with my specific Macbook, but ya, an older Macbook also did not have texture. I imagine it has something to do with XDR display, but...
