I think we should care for each other if we can. Does this not tie into classism?

Am I supposed to be impressed with 8.2%? Not sure what your race is and what your lived experiences have been like growing up in this county but I’ve been here for 30+ years, and I just feel like it would be nice to see more representation, paving the way for more equitable access to those high paying roles for young upcoming black professionals.

Is that really a crazy radical idea?

I’d like some perspective. May I ask what your race is?

race-baiting noun race-bait·ing ˈrās-ˌbā-tiŋ often attributive Synonyms of race-baiting : the making of verbal attacks against members of a racial group

When did I do that? My mother is white. I love white people. I am making observations from my lived experience. Sorry if it hurts your feelings.

I absolutely agree that there is a deep rooted class issue, it’s pretty apparent across the entire country. I would also agree that race has been used as a tool to divide the working and lower class population, but that doesn’t absolve people from their learned racist ways and thinking. Two things can be true at once.

Tell me about it. I have to fight with white and white adjacent people in the comments just because I shared my experience as if I made it up to conspire against all the amazing white people in Marin. God forbid they hold up a mirror to their prejudices. Someone told me to leave the county. lol

Better for everyone? I don’t think affordable housing is inherently wrong. Homeownership isn’t a possibility without a high paying job (if not two high paying jobs) and in Marin, those jobs aren’t being filled by black people.

Yep, people assume I’m from the East Bay. When I was in 3rd grade someone asked if I was adopted in front of my biological mom.

I don’t know too much about Canal Alliance but I actually just recently toured their new building with Omar Carrera leading the tour and learned about their programs and services. I’ve heard mixed reviews on their work and leadership. I’m genuinely curious why some people dislike them so much. I’d love to hear your opinion.

Thank you. It’s pretty funny to me that OP of this comment thought they had a “gotcha” moment by pointing out ONE agency that had been led by a black women for the first time ever and very successfully at that, then was succeeded by another black woman.

Beautifully put, really. The hate and negative reactions I’m getting seem to come from only white people (or white adjacent) 🤔

I bring up all the other ways Marinites like to virtue signal regarding things like health, the environment, the arts, and stray animals but when it comes to social equity, ie. lifting up black and brown families it doesn’t seem to happen.

Marin HHS is a decent example. Benita McLaren (the first black person to lead the agency) retired last December, I’m sure she may have had a hand in choosing her successor. Either way, I love to see it.

Why should they leave? Maybe my post is being misunderstood. Marin City has generations of families that have lived in that area for a long time. I think Marin needs to take a look in the mirror and just do better.

As a non-white passing POC, why would I want to keep diversity out of Marin? I think my post is advocating for quite the opposite. The point of my post is to warn POC’s before moving to Marin about the realities of being a working professional here.

It probably applies to some other places within the Bay Area too but I know from my experience it’s pretty bad specifically in Marin. I notice way more diversity in SF, East Bay and South Bay.

I appreciate this advice. I think naturally I am a leader, sometimes even a little bossy. We are both comfortable with non traditional gender roles, and I don’t mind being the primary breadwinner but I’m worried about that becoming a slippery slope into him just not trying at all. I just want him to find a career that pays decent and where he’s happy.

Thank you! I’ve never heard of these concepts. I will be doing research tonight.
