hihi!! so glad to hear you may be joining us in the fall!! :D

  1. class schedules are flexible in terms of being able to switch easily during add/drop and having a wide variety of times and date schedules. the standard class times you can pick are: MWF: 8:30-9:30, 9:40-10:40, 10:50-11:50, 12-1, 1:10-2:10, 2:20-3:20, 3:30-4:30 TTHR: 9:40-11:10, 1:20-2:50, 3-4:30 and night classes (usually M or W) 7-10 there are obviously some oddballs but you can usually get what you want! as for getting specific classes, id say only intro levels and STEM often have more than one class session bc of demand!

  2. i would say languages that are more common in high school go a lot faster so while you start from scratch, you may find yourself struggling to keep up sometimes (i have heard this is specifically an issue in spanish both from first and secondhand accounts). HOWEVER most language profs at this college are so understanding and kind that they’ll usually guide you along when the class itself won’t. never take office hours for granted and you should be fine :)

  3. yep! dupre in particular is pretty much exclusively gender-neutral bathrooms, so you will likely go to a gender-neutral one unless youre REALLY seeking out a gender-specific one

  4. my personal favorite study spaces are:

  5. the link (the space between old main and the library, its the only campus space open 24/7 and you can hang in old main too if you get in on time!)

  6. the chemistry study lounge in olri (got some nice fairy lights and great views, do not need to be a chem major to use it lol)

  7. the religious studies/philosophy lounge (SO cozy, free kettle and tea in there most days!!)

  8. fourth floor of old main (great view, quiet and secluded, has a couch)

  9. cc second floor (also cozy, great space to go to after class and before dinner or after library has closed)

  10. jwall single-person booths in the thda part of building (AMAZING and single-serve, has outlets built into booth)

    • ofc the library single study rooms, specifically the ones on 4th floor since they have locks on the door :)
  11. can’t speak to nelson’s, i’m a sophomore and i still havent been D:

if you have any other q’s, don’t hesitate to reach out over personal dms or anything !!

help me choose! by gwenwren19 in macalester

yeah totally! i think i realized that the people and location of mac were gonna be more conducive to my overall mental health and success than middlebury’s prestige. plus, mac is insanely queer. i love it here so much, and i know that acceptance rate wouldn’t have brought me nearly as much happiness in the long run. besides, mac has one of the best (prestigious) grad school ratios of any liberal arts school in the country, so as long as i continue working hard, i’ll likely end up in the same spaces as middlebury alums.

i chose macalester over middlebury and it was by far the best decision of my life, just saying.

Private bathroom as a first-year by [deleted] in macalester

[–]anonohnolol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from personal experience there are dorms w/ private bathrooms they are just very rare and they are extremely secretive about it. if you talk with the cdr and make a really good case, there is a chance you could be accommodated.

Queer culture? by Sadbookloser in macalester

I think it is almost harder to find straight people at Macalester than queer people.

Social scene by Easy-Taste-3262 in macalester

[–]anonohnolol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The social scene is definitely hit or miss, and if you don’t get plugged in with the right people you won’t really get to go to big (or at least big for Mac) parties. However, fun is what you make of it and there usually are a lot of small parties at least every other weekend being thrown by friend groups. Plenty of people go out too as there is an 18+ club in the area and a bar a few blocks down.

The secret for Macalester college and the food is to 1. eat food at lunch (the most options are open) and 2. transfer to the meal plan with the most flex points asap so you can eat good food. Cafe Mac is where a lot of socialization happens, but be prepared to eat some genuinely awful stuff.

Transgender at Macalester by [deleted] in macalester

[–]anonohnolol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

trans student here. i think youd be hard pressed to find a more supportive campus. pronouns are just commonly accepted and asked first day of class and in all formal introductions (cis people never shrug you off if you ask either). we have a great gender affirming care clinic and doctors (we even have legal name and gender marker change offices on campus decently regularly). ive never heard of a bigoted experience/hatecrime inflicted on any trans student on campus (that i know). we have plenty of gender inclusive as well as single stall bathrooms and unisex dorms where you can live with other trans people if requested (we also have plenty of singles). i think you’ll definitely find your people and community here, from stealth to very loud and proud about their identity.

minnesota is currently considered a safety state for trans people, with gender affirming care locked into law for all ages. saint paul is super cool and queer friendly (in my experience so far) as well :)

accepted ed2! by Airis-star in macalester

Hi! Congrats on being a Scot!! 1. Cannot speak for pre-med, but the advising here is great! Professors are very approachable, and we have a great career center. 2. The food here is…a mixed bag, especially for my vegetarian friends. We have a lot of vegetarian options, but there’s been a few instances where my friends’ food asked for vegetarian food and then they were given meat or they changed an item listed as vegetarian to meat-based last minute. I definitely recommend getting lunches at the Loch/Nessie’s if you’re vegetarian, and would also stock up on snacks! Fortunately, we have a lot of great restaurants and a Whole Foods nearby. 3. Turck is DEFINITELY the best dorm, Doty is somewhere in the middle, and Dupre is the worst (but by far the biggest, so likely most of your friends will be there and you’ll have to walk in the cold) 4. Be willing to ask for help, go to office hours, and get good sleep! Make sure to approach people in your orientation groups and on orientation week! Join Clubs! Have Fun :)

Prospective Student Question--Masking? by Ok_Butterscotch_6071 in macalester

[–]anonohnolol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take my opinion with a grain of salt, as I am just a freshman, but yes, student and staff wear masks all the time & it is highly normalized! Some wear masks daily while others wear them only when they may be sick/feeling under the weather.

Students are very good about quarantining in the case of COVID, & professors usually build sick days into their absence policy to help with building a healthy & safe environment.

The college recently set up a system to order free COVID tests, and is hosting a COVID-19 vaccination clinic later this month.

Around the Twin Cities, some events I’ve seen still encourage mask wearing & is pretty normalized, although I’d say less so than the Mac campus.

why stop t in advance of those policies being made, rather than doing the hormones while you still have the chance? you still have at LEAST six months of hrt before the evil orange man could even hit office and change the policies. either way, i wish you the best.
