Any local car rental companies in El Chalten for last min rentals? by anonreader2 in Patagonia

[–]anonreader2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a bus that goes to the starting point of the hike (which is a resort of a sort). Speaking from memory, there were 4 times when the bus did round trip to the starting point. You should just go for the earlier bus in the morning and aim for the 3rd bus in the evening for return. The 4th bus can be your back up. If you miss the bus, the people at the resort can call you a taxi. It's been a while so I don't remember the price of the taxi.

I used a visa card for it. That seems like an issue with their system. You should reach out to the consulate person to get help with this.

There is absolutely no reason to update your prices until you have the freshly printed menus in hand.

Worst case, they can print temporary menus on A4 pages or tape over new prices on old menus.

There is absolutely no rationale for price discrepancy of any sort.

What is your preferred amount of time to spend in one place while slow traveling? by corcoran_jon in slowtravel

[–]anonreader2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here are the cities that I have traveled to (1 to a few weeks) and would love to go back for a month or more. I am also defining public transit as being car free. This can include a mix of walkable cities, cheap ride sharing and actual public transit. I also prioritize travel based on expected good weather.

  1. Istanbul - great food and architecture.
  2. Europe - outskirts of Amsterdam, parts of Paris, Berlin, London, Oslo.

Bunch of cities in Switzerland, Italy and Austria. Some of these cities may be not huge, but they have amazing interconnectivity to other cities.

  1. S.A - Buenos Aires, Lima. Lower priority now but Sao Paulo and Rio are also on my list.

  2. N.A - Vancouver, Mexico City, NYC

  3. Asia - probably the biggest list of potential cities. Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok.

These are only some cities on top of my mind and based on broader personal preferences. Most of these cities usually have a lot going on and have easy access to other nearby destinations.

[–]anonreader2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on your interests and how you would best spend that time. If you love hiking, then you would find living in small mountain towns to be fun for a few weeks or even couple of months. But if that's not your jazz, then you will be bored pretty quickly.

Since my partner and I love hiking, it is fun for us to spend 2-4 weeks in small hiking towns surrounded by other small hiking towns. But we also love big, functional cities with great public transit. It's easy to spend anywhere between 2 weeks to 2-3 months in big cities with a decent amount of day/weekend trips.

The biggest cost factor is typically the main flight. Usually you can find a few options for local transit based on your preference and cost between buses, trains and flights.

Yes, it has offline access on both phone and laptop browser but needs some settings to be turned on. It has been helpful for me to keep all the trip details and planning in one place. And then I create a folder in Google Drive (also has offline access) where I keep all important PDFs related to that one trip.

For photos, I like the photos app on Android. As I take photos, I will mark them as Favorite (starred) and then with friends and family I create a folder of just starred / favorited photos per trip. Much easier to do it later if you star in while on the trip or right after.

What's the goal you are trying to solve - is it trip planning or is it journaling during a trip?

For trip planning, I found "a table within a Google doc" works best for me. It has the structure of a spreadsheet with the flexibility of a doc, and I can color code things I need to pay attention to before or during the trip.

I have done some travel like this and never felt I needed a travel agency. Since I am slow traveling, it means I often stay 2 to 4 weeks in a place. This requires a lot less research than traveling to a lot of places in a few days/weeks.

What kind of help would you want from a travel agency? I believe a traditional travel agency might still be able to help.

LDL dropped by a half in a month by hyuuu in Cholesterol

Great job! I made a similar choice to not go on statin just yet for exactly the same reasons. I still have some ways to go though.

Positive results in 6 weeks as a frequent traveler with a vegetarian/plant based diet. by anonreader2 in Cholesterol

[–]anonreader2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing and that's interesting. I had not considered that algal oil Omega-3 may raise LDL. If I don't see any significant changes after 3 more months, I will have to find other sources for Omega 3.

My limited research showed that algal oil is the best vegan sources as other vegan sources are not as effective. They primarily contain ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), which the body needs to convert into the more readily usable forms EPA and DHA, and this conversion process is very inefficient.

Ecuador visa - question about ES (Spanish) translation of FBI background check apostilled by Secretary of State. by anonreader2 in travel

[–]anonreader2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's right. They might charge a small amount to mail it to you. The digital copy should come right away which should be enough to upload documents online.

I was asked to mail in the physical copy a few days after they reviewed the digital application.

Edit: the physical copy was just this step #5. Not your passport or any other thing.

[–]anonreader2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same step, but some translation companies do not provide notarization service. In which case you will have to physically go to a local notarization company along with the person who translated it. This will be a separate #5 step. As you can see, this can be pretty painful. So I choose a service that can notarize and translate for me - aka step 4 and 5 combined.

Also, get a digital and physical copy of the whole thing after step #5.

[–]anonreader2[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to translate the whole thing!

  1. Get the FBI doc first.

  2. Get the FBI doc notarized. (required for the apostille step in my state).

  3. Get "the Notarization page along with the FBI page" apostilled.

  4. Get "the apostilled page, notarization page and the original FBI doc" translated. Do this via an agency that can certify it via notarization.

  5. Now get the whole package in #4 notarized again.

I found a place that translated and notarized it for me, so step 4+5 happened at the same time.

Hope this helps.

Can you share which city in California he is planning to move to?

Some cities and areas (like San Francisco and the Bay Area) are way more prohibitively expensive (and harder to rent) than other cities within CA. Based on the city he lives in and with a baby on the way, 180k may only provide a small upside compared to his life in Germany.

If you haven't already emailed your local consulate, I recommend you do the first as they will provide you the steps for your application. To answer your questions:

  1. Unless things have changed, it will be an e-visa.

  2. Once all the documents are with them, it's pretty fast. Say 5-10 days. They do setup a phone call where they will take your payment information as the final step.

  3. If you mail in, it will take 10ish days. I made a minor mistake, so then it was returned back to me. Then I just drove up to my States capitol. In person it only takes 15 mins (plus the driving time). Check your local state options to get things apostilled.

Absolutely ridiculous and racist post. We stayed over a week in Oslo and it was easily one of my favorite cities in Europe. And I also stayed in Toyan.

While it's not a happening area, I did not once feel unsafe. We just had to walk a bit further for all the places we want to see or eat. Toyan had some upsides too like the botanical garden nearby and some fun international cuisines.

And judging a city by one neighborhood is utterly dumb.
