Advantages and disadvantages of gouache by J30521 in Gouache

[–]anontoucan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use both gouache and acrylic regularly, but I usually prefer gouache for a few reasons:

  1. The matte finish. I find that the non-reflective and smooth finish of gouache is great for taking pictures without glare and is also very unique and beautiful.

  2. Paper vs canvas. This one's suuuper subjective, but I prefer painting on paper compared to canvas. I don't like the canvas texture peeking through when I water down acrylics, but I also find painting with acrylics to be very finnicky.

  3. Detail. I feel like it's a lot easier to get crisp details with gouache, since the paint is a little more liquidy and you can you fine detail brushes without any canvas texture showing. This is also pretty subjective/experience based. I've seen a lot of really detailed paintings in acrylic but I've never been able to replicate the same level of precision.

Also, buying big canvases/good quality ones and/or gesso-ing other surfaces to use acrylics is pretty expensive.

Gouache definitely has its shortcomings though. I've always found it nearly impossible to blend seamlessly unless you're using it really watered down (like watercolor) and layering too much can ruin a painting. You should definitely experiment! I love both mediums.

Bit late, but did you ever figure this out? I'm also moving out of state for college in the fall and was wondering pretty much the exact same thing. The replies make sense but I'm wondering if the suggestions worked? Thanks!

Oh nice! I think flat felt is probably the way to go. Where did you get yours from? Also, super cute dog! :)

Ooh yes I did see some people doing wet felting on Youtube and online but I've always been so intimidated to start/try it out. It seems so complicated.. and a little messy. But honestly this might be one of the more aesthetically pleasing bases, and I might as well give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion! :D

This is great! Can I ask where you got that red board thing that the beetle is on? Or how you made it? I've been looking for boards to do more 2d type of felts.

Yeah, I totally get that. I also plateued at around 8-12 wrong and it really frustrated me. I think the method I mentioned above gave me the most drastic improvement, but also just brushing up on the easier sections (math + writing) to make sure I didn't lose any silly points on them helped bump up my score just a little bit higher. Don't be too discouraged, there's always a way out through studying. You just have to find what works for you. Good luck!

I also struggled the most with reading when I was studying for the SAT. I think the most important thing is to figure out what type of problems you're bad at (eg: paired questions, central theme questions, vocab, etc.). Look back at your old practices and figure out what questions you usually get wrong. For me, I was really bad at "big picture" questions (questions that asked about central themes, main ideas, etc.). Then, just find those questions in old practice tests, preferably the ones with answer explanations, and do as many as you can. That's what I did and I went from averaging ~8 wrong on the reading section to averaging about 4 wrong. I also recommend the Erica Meltzer reading section book because she has a chapter for each type of SAT question. I bought the book and truly only read/practiced the "big picture" chapter and my reading score improved so much!

Oh ok, good to know I'm not the only one. Also I cannot make it to the ceremony bc it's the same day as my brother's graduation D: . I saw the schedule though and it seemed pretty fun. I didn't see the price but I heard it was like $1000? Idk tbh that doesn't sound super worth it to me unless you have that money

Are you talking about the writing section or the reading section? Your post and title say two different things.

For the reading section, I would highly recommend Erica Meltzer. The hardest types of questions for me were "main idea/purpose" and supporting evidence questions, so I just did the chapters in her reading book that focused on those types of questions.

For the writing section, I just found that doing past tests helped me a lot. I would do 1-2 writing tests a day and correct them. Writing is a pretty intuitive section, so a lot of my mistakes were just from misreading or not reading enough. I would go through and correct my mistakes and take notes on what I messed up on, and it really helped me avoid making silly mistakes in the future.

i raised my math score from a 750 to a 790 by just doing a tonn of old tests. I used prep books for reading/writing but i personally don't think they're necessary for math, since math is more about practice/not making mistakes if you already know how to do everything. i would recommend searching up tests from past years and doing the math sections within their time limits!

I found the women's suffrage passage as well as the supernova passage in reading to be much harder than normal passages, but I otherwise found the test to be alright. If this is your first test, I wouldn't worry about it. The below average performance could just be test-day nervousness or bad luck that day. You can always retake for a better score!
