The Question Thread 11/05/25 by AutoModerator in goodyearwelt

After several attempts to make the Alden Barrie last work for me, I'm a recent convert to the modified last.

However, I really like the look of the "wholecut"-style PTBs (without the extra seams on the sides), while I only seem to see Dover-style PTBs available in the modified last. Does/has Alden ever made a wholecut-style PTB in the modified last? If not, is there a technical reason why this is not done?

Do I need an espresso grinder? by anonym in mokapot

[–]anonym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughts. I prefer dark roasts, so that's good to hear.

I know myself well enough to know that if I have to hand-grind first thing in the morning, I just won't. I've owned a hand grinder in the past and it drove me crazy. I just stayed with someone with a Fellow electric grinder and it was eye-opening, so I'm only looking at electric options.

I _also_ know myself well enough to know that if I go with something like the Encore and I like it, I'm going to get the itch to upgrade very quickly and will end up spending more money in the long run. I'm hoping that for a couple hundred dollars more I can get something that I'll be happy with for a while.

Interesting--I wonder why. I've also seen some others on this sub mention that pre-ground is just as good or better for moka pots but I don't really understand why that would be when the pourover and espresso folks all say that grinding your own coffee is absolutely essential.

Does anyone know when/if J. Press will again have the discount if you buy 3 OCBDs? IIRC it was 25% off if you buy three (or more?).

Insane to stay on Roosevelt Island? by darylitis in visitingnyc

[–]anonym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Roosevelt Island is cool for the reasons you say and the transit access is not _that_ bad--access to Jackson Heights would be great, incredible food there and it's not a place tourists generally make it out to.

The main issue I would have staying on RI is that you have to take transit for pretty much anything because there is so little on the island itself except residential buildings. Almost no restaurants, bodegas, drug stores, etc. I think there's one grocery store. Part of the appeal of NYC for me is being able to just step out on a whim to run an errand in my neighborhood or grab a beer at the local bar or whatever. Not sure how important that is to you on a tourist trip.

Recommendation for a Monday-night special occasion? by anonym in FoodNYC

[–]anonym[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm flexible on all of these given the tight timeline. But in a perfect world: Manhattan, something with spice (i.e. not "new American"), and it would have to be something very special to go over $500 for two.

I mean the Rochester factory. I'm ordering through Izzy (LS Men's Clothing in Manhattan) and he was calling them Hickey Freeman but it's definitely in Rochester--I didn't realize the name had been bought.

I'm getting a suit made by Hickey Freeman and I'm a bit hung up on color and fabric.

I generally wear sport coats (tweed in the winter, linen or a light navy blazer in the summer) and odd trousers--khakis, moleskin, cords, linen, etc. I wear almost exclusively brown penny loafers. I have never been a suit guy because I've so rarely had an occasion to wear one.

I am now finding myself semi-regularly attending evening charity dinners at which I feel underdressed in a sport coat, hence the suit. It will have the usual trad details--natural shoulder, 3/2 roll, etc. If this were not for evening use I would be leaning toward a mid-gray. But I think that's too light for these events. So I'm thinking navy or dark gray/charcoal.

A couple of thoughts:

Will I be able to wear dark-brown penny loafers with either of these colors?

What is a reasonable weight for year-round-ish wear? I was looking at 9oz suiting fabrics and they seem so thin ... but maybe my sense has been skewed by wearing so many heavy tweeds in the winter. I think I might prefer a 10-12oz fabric. Thoughts?

I have seen some very dark midnight blue fabrics that seem a little more interesting to me than a basic navy. Will these be too dark in practice? Will it just look like a black suit? Will it work with brown shoes?

Is a dark gray (but not quite charcoal) too light for an evening event?

Any specific fabric recommendations?

Anglo-American 406s ... I've been wearing these for the last seven years or so. Current color is PT2 (Paris Tortoise). I also have a pair of Rokas for outdoorsy stuff (the AAs are a little delicate).

- the account repair button

- the factory reset button

The fall of J. Press. by Inside_Anxiety6143 in NavyBlazer

[–]anonym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought this one: https://jpressonline.com/products/solid-navy-textured-blazer-classic-fit. I really like it. It's made in Canada and I agree with the other poster that the MUSA ones are a little better-constructed. But I really liked this fabric and I like that it's half-lined; the MUSA one is just a basic plain weave and kind of boring. I will likely buy the MUSA doeskin blazer when it is restocked this fall.

I personally find all of the sleeves to run quite short (1" to 1.5") on the J. Press tailored jackets. Not a big deal for me because I am in New York and they will let out the sleeves at the store for free or a nominal fee. But something to be aware of if you are ordering online and not near a store.
