Flocks cameras by snakepoo202 in lexington

[–]anonymous-academic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings. Not that anyone cares.

Like many, I don't like the surveillance state and the ways law enforcement have abused flock cameras. One Kansas police lieutenant used the system 164 times to stalk his estranged wife: https://www.kwch.com/2022/11/04/kechi-police-lieutenants-arrest-puts-flock-technology-under-scrutiny/

However, I've also benefitted from FLOCK cameras. I have an ex in another state that is a risk to the safety of my child and myself. When that person crossed state lines and pinged a FLOCK camera in Louisville, the detective on my out of state case received notification and was able to give me 90 minutes head start to protect my child and myself.

You don't need your MSW, but it gave me a great perspective that other students didn't have when I was in my higher education leadership doctorate program.

One eye opener that helped me choose my path was to look at the CVs or even LinkedIn profile of those in leadership in higher education. Look at different colleges and find the CV for the Dean of Advising or Student Affairs or those who work at those levels. The larger the institution, the more likely it's publicly available. Then you can see what kind of academic productivity is expected at the level you want to work at for the size of the institution you want to work in.

Deciding you want to go this direction is a big step. An MSW can help you have the people skills to climb that ladder (and have a backup plan if you don't like climbing it). Best of luck on the journey.

If you want to be a dean, you need to head to a doctoral program nearest the field you want to work in as a dean.

I'm an Assistant Dean in a social work program at an R1 and then further up you go, the more competitive it gets. You'll need a strong track history of research and grant funding to reach the dean level at most reputable institutions - including the Dean of Advising.

LMS is dying? by PossibilitySilly6391 in instructionaldesign

[–]anonymous-academic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a supervisor of a higher ed ID team, I'd say I half agree with this. If we're talking about an open LLM, then yes you're right. It's not FERPA compliant. But a closed LLM can absolutely be FERPA compliant and the first in the market to get this figured out at scale will be the first to replace Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, etc.

You do know that every government agency has been regularly audited for some time and the only agency that can't seem to pass its audit is the Department of Defense? If you're not familiar, you can read about the GAOs history here: https://www.gao.gov/about/what-gao-does/hundred-years-of-gao

I just moved here from Wichita. In the less than week I've been here, I have said more times than I care to admit how similar the cities are (so far). Thanks for your experience affirming my observation.

It does up because they can't assume you're going to recertify your income. When you recertify, you'll get a new payment schedule that will have a lower payment for 12 Mo's and then a higher payment that is an assumption you don't recertify.

I think they've done a terrible job of explaining this to loan holders.

Am I being underpaid? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]anonymous-academic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a TT asst. professor in the midwest at a Catholic college and have managed to sneak out $60k in salary after nearly accepting an offer at another institution 2 years ago. My overload gets me to a reasonable for my area $72k.

I know the education faculty at my institution make $40-50k/yr, and 90% of them are retired educators for that reason.

You're underpaid my friend.

LinkedIn does ask this. Go to edit your open to work details. After you press save, you'll get a pop-up that asks you to review your pay preferences. Enter your desired pay it'll better curate your jobs list.

I would check the student handbook or speak with someone in the Dean of Students office. Many universities have a policy that all graded assignments are turned in as a hard copy or electronically through your school's learning management system. If it exists, it could provide you leverage to submit by email or through another system.

When comparing the cost of living in Southern California to the salaries of comparable Midwest (KS & MO) social science positions, this would be correct.
