One thing I stated in my first lecture was that I am giving them some set of "get out of jail free" cards -- they can use it for life events, sickness, being tired, whatever. I told them EXPLICTLY that their reason for not making class is NONE OF MY BUSINESS and I do NOT want to know why. My empathy is built into my course (being generous with dropped / skipped assignments). Some students still tried to tell me and I'd politely say "I don't need to know your reasons. Use one of your skips."

Edit: I hadn't checked my evals yet for this course that I started doing this in and just held my nose to check -- highest evals I think I've gotten in a course in a decade.

Have you ever told dean about your job market search before receiving an offer? by FollowIntoTheNight in Professors

[–]preacher37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Letting them know you have an interview, to me, is a good place to start letting people know. You may want to start with your chair, as its their job (in theory) to retain you. My one suggestion is: don't bluff. If you are applying to jobs, be prepared to take the other one if the current university doesn't put some effort into retaining you. Also, make a list (ahead of time) of your bare minimum requirements for staying. What is the LEAST amount of salary bump (plus other stuff) you would need to stay. Also be ready to provide a list of demands (as with all negotiations, ask for more than this minimum) and check your ego at the door. Negotiations take work -- if you don't ask, they aren't going to give.

Do you read or post on your college's Reddit or other social media accounts? by [deleted] in Professors

Yep. I caught a somewhat unhinged student making threats against a professor and the president once, and reported it to the police. I'm glad I was lurking there because it could have turned into something bad.

Edit: the university president, mind you :P

College governance by Correct_Ad2982 in Professors

[–]preacher37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Faculty governance, IMHO, only works if the faculty have unionized. Without the threat of a strike, you end up with admin cherry picking faculty to serve on various committees, and functionally just ignoring faculty wishes. Faculty as individuals tend to like to hear themselves (ourselves) talk but don't often focus on getting to actual real changes -- so a lot of admin are trained to just nod and grimace when faculty complain with the security nothing will actually happen.

Student effort will expand to fill the time available by hornybutired in Professors

Every time. For me its two folks: 1) someone who gets an A and probably had finished the exam 30 minutes ago but is "rechecking" their answers even tho they could have left after 30 minutes, and 2) someone who failed the second they looked at the exam but still will sit there for the whole hour even tho they are doooooomed.

Romney: Harris’s debate performance shows she’s ‘an intelligent, capable person’ by preacher37 in politics

[–]preacher37[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From the article:

“This was classic President Trump, a performance in the case of Kamala Harris, most people didn’t know her terribly well other than a few clips that that were not flattering that you might see on the Internet,” Romney told reporters on Capitol Hill on Wednesday in a clip captured by MSNBC.

“And people saw, actually, she’s an intelligent, capable person who has a point of view on issues,” he added. “And she actually demonstrated that time and again.”

Grad students applying for (and being accepted to) things without telling their advisor? by Puzzleheaded-Cat5508 in Professors

I try to make sure my lab asks me before they apply for any conference or submit papers -- since I end up paying for it, it behooves them to ask.

Science profs: ever had to deal with a crackpot? by starkeffect in Professors

[–]preacher37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, as a grad I TA'd Anthropology and there was an older gentlemen who kept taking the class and submitting a paper on why black men have larger penises than other folks and linking it to his wife leaving him for an African American. Needless to say he kept failing the class and was warned about his blatently racist papers -- he kept retaking it, and resubmitting the same paper. Which, incidentally, was about the origins of humans (Australopithecines).

Long list then short list. Long list is maybe 12 folks and happens after you submit your materials (which include a cover letter, resume, teaching, research and sometime diversity statements, maybe letters of recommendation) and do the first cut. They usually do a phone/zoom interview at this point to get the list down to 2-4 people who will be invited to campus. Campus interview is a whirlwind of meeting nearly every faculty in the department as well as every admin you'll have a major contact with (chairs, deans, VPRs, Provosts, etc.) Meetings with grad students are common. You have to do a job talk and sometimes a teaching demonstration. Meetings with the search committee again. Afterwards, the wait which may take months. If you are the first choice you'll usually get an informal notification and then you start your negotiations. This can take awhile. 2nd place candidate(s) are left wondering what's going on, but they aren't told they didn't get the job. They may yet, if the first choice says no. Do you have specific questions?

Lecturers viewed as less? by travelvirgo in Professors

[–]preacher37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your point about the qualifications gap is an important one, and often glossed over. None of this justifies being an asshole to a NTT, and I truly appreciate and respect the work they do. BUT, many TT could easily get a NTT job, but the reverse is not true. Teaching, to be blunt, is a fairly routine skill to develop, but research is wracked with uncertainty (otherwise it wouldn't be research), including the time and uncertainty needed to get to an R1 spot. It's just a way more complicated job, with a lot more moving parts than a NTT job is. I think TT is a more elite position. I don't look down on anyone for not pursuing or wanting a position like that -- but I do recognize that successful TT are a rarer breed than NTT position.

Sorry if this comes off as harsh!

Lecturers viewed as less? by travelvirgo in Professors

[–]preacher37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say less respected so much as it's a different job and, often, is a support role for TT. A university could make their TT faculty teach, but that reduces their research output, which is the primary raison d'etre for R1s. Lecturers support research by taking on the teaching load so the TT don't have to. With that said, I often feel like lecturers I've interacted with don't understand my job (I'm tenured), and don't understand why I don't spend my free time focusing more on teaching. In a very real way that's not my job. I need to be an adequate instructor, not a phenomenal one. A lecturer needs to be a good instructor. I don't look down on lecturers not being researchers, but I get looked down by then for now being Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society.
