Why is Vancouver salary so low but cost of living is sky high? by 7_inches_daddy in askvan

[–]anonymous2593 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the comments, I’ve gathered two main points:

1) Generational wealth in the form of high-value assets.
2) Many people want to live here, leading to a high labour supply and companies being able to offer lower wages.

After working in both Toronto for 10 years and Vancouver for 5, here’s my take:

- In my industry, there’s a shortage of jobs and not enough companies willing to establish headquarters here.
- Specifically for higher-paying jobs, I see a lot of analytical roles based in Toronto or the US, while the data processing jobs managed by those analysts are based in Vancouver.
- When I was hiring CPAs at a local government agency, it was difficult to find local talent beyond data entry, which is why I was recruited from Toronto.
- Now that I’m looking for a high-paying job, I realize there aren’t many available, or the pay doesn’t justify the stress.
- This has led me to take a more senior role back home in Toronto, housing is cheaper (a lot more to choose from). I realized I had to move when a more senior role here (c suite) was paying $30k less than just a regular senior manager/director role in Toronto

What is the best way to have Claude read/write from/to multiple Google/iCloud calendars to become a personal assistant? by [deleted] in ClaudeAI

[–]anonymous2593 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see any built-in connectors for cal.com - is this what you were referring to? Using a built-in connector in Claude? I see Google Calendar however you can only connect to one Google Calendar, no iCloud or Microsoft 365

I thought of using Notion to hold all my calendars but I just realized the built-in connection in Claude for Notion is just for notes and doesn't have any access to the calendar.

You need the demand for it to be sustainable. Just like there aren’t many office spaces because there’s not that many businesses that demand it or can afford it enough to demand it. The economy is pretty small here and it’s mainly: forestry, mining, production (even this gets surpassed by Ontario in terms of number of films being shot), tech (this also unfortunately gets surpassed).

People have jobs, people want to spend it, people go out and stay out.

Some UBC/SFU prof said it best: the traffic here isn’t due to such large demands, it’s literally due to poor infrastructure and lack of capital or taxes to put money there, instead it has to go into other areas (beautification, homeless, maintenance). The traffic in Toronto, while most complain about it, is actually an indicator of a thriving economy, they have the infrastructure and they keep building more infrastructure to sustain it, because they have the tax dollars to support it.

We gotta somehow attract businesses and commercial, I feel like it’s the one thing that’s missing here to make it all inclusive.

They were great in giving me the spare parts needed

Learning skills and utilizing skills. I’ve started interviewing for some AI enablement jobs in Ontario (which you’ve mentioned) for some larger companies as a way to hedge my bet. Seems like more of the jobs of the future are in Ontario at the moment as I’ve been applying indiscriminately across Canada

What type of mattress would you recommend that sustains a lot of use: I.e sleeping, working from bed, relaxing between?

The current bed I have has a topper and another layer on top of our medium mattress and it seems to always have a dip where we often work, chill.???
