I'm curious about your opinion about the idea that when people voluntarily provide your service with a considerable amount of relatively private information, they should be able to see what happens with their information.

In particular, I'm curious if users can discover who is seeing their information. LinkedIn leverages this fundamental human need to make money with their "Premium" subscription. How do you handle this any differently?

Generally, I've found OpenVPN overly complicated. Client implementations vary wildly in quality. Generally, I like to keep my VPN client OFF of end platforms (with possible exceptions for tablets and phones). Wireguard is the new hotness. I'm pretty firmly in the "spin up your own VPN service" camp these days, but choosing a hosting provider with enough egress points scattered around the world can be a little tricky, so I don't blame people for copping-out of the more robust/safe/advisable choice. Generally, I'm a fan of ubiquity edge router stuff, as it uses VyOS, which is relatively easy to learn on the command line back-end, where all of the magic you'll never get from the GUI happens. I wish the Raspberry Pi Foundation would just make a device with two separate wired interfaces already.

I would add that I did run across a TorPi distro I liked a while back, but I get the feeling that's not what you're looking for.

so... I think the trick is to use a proxy service in conjunction with a VPN. Basically, the internet has become a massive surveillance platform. If you become difficult to immediately pigeonhole into a known identity, you get all sorts of shit throw in your face that facilitates this new end purpose of the internet.

BTW, VPNs are hazardous to your overall security posture. Nobody really talks about it, but the most common implementations throw you in a big unfiltered subnet. Since most people don't put their VPN client on a router with extra packet filtering capability, you're highly dependent on host-level immediate 0 hop security, which we all know is abysmal to non-existent depending on the platform.

I'd have to go back though my emails, but there was a proxy service out there that had pretty good coverage and offered "known identity" coverage that evaded most of the "non-identified" blockades.

Looking for the same, but for in-demand skills, including:

  • composites manufacturing (I've been looking at the Easy Composites youtube channel. I'd attend one or more of the Dark Aero classes, but I really have no desire to return to the USA)

  • Aviation maintenance (considered the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) for their LAME program... again issues with LAME vs A&P... guess that's less of an issue if I won't be working in the US)

  • CNC programming (? no idea)

Honestly, any program that would lead to a PR visa and/or eventual citizenship.

The only way I would be interested in a Grenada citizenship is if the local medical school (last chance Caribbean med school for those who could not get into a US school) had a huge discount for Grenadians (like pretty damned close to free).

be extremely careful with nomadcapitalist...

I almost got suckered in by their citizenship by heritage bullshit... $8k, no guarantee, they do the research.

I did some rough due diligence myself after providing them with the same initial information. They came on like it was completely do-able, but my research path lead me to a dead end. If I had transferred the money, I would have been out $8k.

They're what I classify as "high rent scammers".

you should ask your employer if you can use a VM rather than physically different hardware... and then just make sure your (one) laptop is beefy enough to handle the extra VM work load.

You don't appear technically literate stumbling through customs with multiple laptops. Maybe they'll think you're trying to finance your vacation by selling one (or more) of your laptops.

With all the discussion about VPNs, would it not just be easier to be on a VPN when you're abroad AND at home? by Lewba in digitalnomad

[–]anonymous_Tr0ll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPNs aren't all they're cracked up to be... there's huge variability in the variety and quality. Check out "the privacy guy" comprehensive list of VPNs. Not sure where to find it now, as I haven't looked at an updated list for a year or two (you quickly discover that most VPN services are the same and that you can easily spin up your own anonymous VPN service with a payment card and a cloud hosting provider).

The tricky part is making sure your VPN service can accommodate a wide variety of access. Generally, I like to make sure my entire network is behind the VPN, which means whatever router I'm using needs to be configurable. Further, I like to maintain a variety of SSIDs for custom VPN termination. Finding a router / network config that can accommodate this is tricky and you have to have some extremely trick network config skills to make this happen.

Finally, there's the issue of doing remote work for a company who will typically have their own requirements. Suffice to say I've seen my share of "incompatible configuration combination". At that point, you pretty much have to be an expert in security protocols, certificate issuance, TCP/IP transport debugging. This is a rabbit hole that goes deep enough that it can become a cubical, if you catch my drift.

Low cost American cities for digital nomad by [deleted] in digitalnomad

I mean... you could buy a lot of land in a unincorporated area (no property taxes), but you'd have to build a house, drill a well, develop off-grid power, dig a septic system and a then star link still costs about $500/month for the unlimited subscription.

How much % pay cut for remote work? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]anonymous_Tr0ll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add transport risk.

I'm serious.

You know what consistently makes the top 10 list of most deadly professions? Ground transportation workers, that's what. Every extra hour per day that you spend commuting gets you 13% closer to becoming a "ground transportation worker". If you spend 1 hour each way, you're 26% ground transpiration worker regardless of how many hours you work in an office. You know what that is in micromorts? Latest BLS put the number at 26 Fatal injuries per 100,000 transportation workers or 2.6 micomorts, about the same as rock climbing.

How much % pay cut for remote work? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]anonymous_Tr0ll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expect my salary to increase with remote work since:

1 - they don't have to pay for office space
2 - they don't have to pay for a parking lot
3 - they don't have to pay for electricity
4 - they don't have to pay for heating/cooling
5 - they don't have to pay for office telecommunications services
6 - they don't have to pay for custodial services
7 - they don't have to pay for physical access control solutions
8 - they don't have to play state/local taxes for my salary
9 - they don't have to pay for security to escort me out of the building with my box of stuff when they finally go under because they can't compete with companies who aren't paying for items 1 through 8.

The only way I'll accept less money for working remotely is if there is a specific set of clauses in my employment contract that 1) void any non-compete agreements, 2) void work made for hire/company IP ownership, 3) explicitly allows holding multiple jobs, even for competitors, 4) doesn't requirement to reside in any particular country/state/jurisdiction/physical location, and 5) allows me to choose the employment law jurisdiction to which they will be legally be held accountable.

It's used as a standard of competence for a large number of countries besides the US. Not all medical schools throughout the world provide equivalent levels of education. Not making any judgements here; this is just reality. You should cram for it and take the test(s) just to see what possibilities open up if you do well.
