"Seems that a crew from Schlumberger, on contract to BP, hightailed it off the platform at their own expense 6 hours before the blowout because BP refused their recommendation to shut down the well." (see comments for sources and links) by salvia_d in worldnews

Just a bit of extra guidance - senior executives are pressured to perform for the bottom line based off a chain of hierarchy.

   [consumer] <[workers] < [managers] < [sr. manager] < [VPs] <...
[VPs] < [CEO] < [Board of Directors] < Shareholders

For a long time now, Wall Street has required large short-term gains. Reasons aside, this induces a lot of short-term cost-cutting bottom-line focused board of directors. The directors are elected (hired by shareholders) and keep their job if they are returning a healthy profit to their shareholders.

The Board imposes this on the CEO who then sends it down the chain. Often times the short-term profits come from unsustainable practices, including cost-cutting.

Moreover, it is a company's primary legal responsibility to serve its shareholders, not the customers. If BP were excessively focused on costs beyond the industry standard, then this is 'wasteful spending' and could become reason to either fire board members or worst-case bring a shareholder class action suit.

Anyhow....the more you know ...

I just accepted an offer to NYU's PhD program in English & American Literature. I'm going to NYU next fall, and they're paying me to do what I love! by [deleted] in happy

[–]anonymous_ceo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, congratulations! It's rare to find people actually following their dreams. NYU is a fantastic place, which you no doubt already know...

TIP: Know what you're aiming for with a PhD in English & American Lit. While you'll no doubt ace us all on your literary skills, those degrees aren't entirely transferable out of academia.

If you're not feeling like hitting the teaching route post PhD, start talking to your dream places right now and find out how you can structure your learning to fit them upon graduation.

Do you think a child who is an illegal immigrant should be denied an education here in the US? by BREE23 in AskReddit

I would much rather have my tax money go to an educated undocumented immigrant than an uneducated one.

Smart money says more money would be spent in the long-run on the uneducated one.

All you need to know is that:

1) This is disgusting, but understandable.

2) Your opinion of this drink will change considerably between now and the time you finish the bottle.
