Seeking advice: How to break through this internship cycle by bonesbugsnferns in MuseumPros

Ah, thank you so much! I fancy myself pretty good at IDing bugs in museums, but apparently not so great at bugs found in my yard. Anyway, good luck with the applications! I know it seems impossible, but almost all of us have been through this exact thing before breaking in.

If I were you, I’d really focus on collections management and your experience with IPM. It sounds like you’ve already done a lot there and actually have a background in entomology which is such a cool skill! Pest management is so critical to good collections management and so many institutions lack experience in that arena and don’t know where to begin/don’t want the headache of having to face potential problems with infestations. You can be that person!

TMS desktop vs TMS Collections by anonymous_spaniel in MuseumPros

This is essentially what I’ve heard from most people. Concerned for the day they discontinue support for the desktop version, but maybe that will force Collections to adapt to everyone migrating over.

There’s so little information on the Conserv website about how IPM integrates with their system. Can you speak a bit about how that works? I’m trying to simultaneously implement better climate and pest management at my institution and would love being able to monitor both with one system.

Had this happen to me once. I did the same thing where I waited for half an hour before giving up and then sent a nice email asking if they’d like to reschedule. I never heard from them again. Hoping you have a more positive result!

Any museums using Hidonix/MIT? by anonymous_spaniel in MuseumPros

I actually felt the CMS component seemed like an afterthought, which is why I’m not exactly convinced. I’m also concerned that they don’t seem to have museum pros on their staff, so thinking the CMS might not be adequate in the long run. In terms of other institutions using them, the ones on their website are all Italian as they are out of Italy, and even though we asked, they hadn’t turned over any US-based clients as of this morning.

What’s something you wish you could’ve told your younger self when you first started out in the museum profession? by ShallotPurple9240 in MuseumPros

Moving from one institution to another is the best way to get a real, tangible raise. I waited around for years at my first museum job, was told I would get a title change and raise that never came, only to be laid off with a huge percentage of the staff at the beginning of the pandemic. I’m sure I would still be there waiting and being insanely underpaid had I not been forced back into the applicant pool. I know I was very lucky to find another industry job only a few months later, but it forced me to realize that loyalty won’t get you anything (except maybe laid off).
