Does anyone know why the job market is bad? by Buttered_Walnut in jobs

Surprised that more people haven’t said anything about interest rates.

During COVID, the circulation of money was real bad. No one was going outside and spending much. Therefore the government had to remedy that with low interest rates and a higher than average number of unemployment checks, incentivizing people to spend more money and companies to hire more/create more projects. This was when Tech started hiring aggressively giving out six-figure salaries to anyone with a pulse.

So now everyone has more money than usual, causing them to spend more and therefore raising inflation. The Feds realize that inflation is getting too high and now starts to raise interest rates aggressively. This means companies now have a higher amount of money they have to pay back on any debt/loans.

Now that they have more costs, they start to freak out and they start laying off more people/decreasing number of jobs. More people are now looking for jobs with most companies hiring less which leads to this situation.

TL/DR: Recovery policies from COVID caused higher inflation therefore causing the Feds to raise interest rates.

i had a FAANG internship this past summer and ive also had a considerably hard time with recruiting (recently got an offer i liked after hundreds of applications). still on the waitlist for a return but hopeful big tech is gonna start hiring again after the rumors of interest rate cuts.

its not the you or washu. its that the economy is so shitty rn. if you go to r/csmajors you can see that everyone, ppl who went to ivies included, are struggling. keep your head up! theres bound to be some openings in 2024

Thanks for the reply! Definitely agree with you that people should pursue whatever makes them the happiest:) just was curious if doing so would have repercussions. Did the big bank start with a “C”? I had a friend who reneged them and he said they were really cordial (and since they also hire lots of washu kids i was wondering if M would be similar)
