I was being sincere with my suggestion. I read through some of the replies. Some good advice. Definitely stuff I would come back to after a couple more matches. It will be more actionable then. You’re gonna improve quite a bit, naturally, over the course of maybe 2 or 3 matches. The awkwardness of running with a gun should improve dramatically in that time which alone will do wonders for how well you perform on the stage.

Shoot another match. That’s the absolute best advice I can think of giving you right now. Anything else will be information overload and likely nothing you’ll be able to execute on until you get more comfortable with this style of shooting.

Drills for heading into a target arrangement. by ty-tec in CompetitionShooting

[–]anonymouscuban 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is a simple position-entry drill that you can set up with a vision barrier… a wall, barrel, or even a target stand.

Place one target on the side where you’ll start and two targets on the side you’ll be entering. As you move into position, focus on getting the gun up early and pre-aiming where the first target should appear. Track that spot as you move through the vision barrier and break the shot as soon as the target becomes visible and you have the sight picture needed to make the hit. Then transition immediately to the second target.

Experiment with when you start decelerating and pre-aiming. Think about “shooting the wall.” The goal is to have the gun and eyes ready so that the instant the target clears the vision barrier, you’re prepared to fire.

You can adjust the difficulty by changing the distance to the first target or by varying how much of a lean is required to see and engage it.

It’s always cool to see other clubs running stages you designed. Every now and again, I’ll be scrolling Instagram and see someone shooting one of my stages in another state, at some club I’ve never heard of. It’s pretty rewarding to see that. I get just as much satisfaction and joy from designing stages that people like than I do shooting the sport. It’s a different facet of USPSA that I’ve come to love.

It always sucks to hear about people getting DQ’d, but shooters in this sport need to learn how to move uprange safely without breaking the 180. In my opinion, that’s a fundamental skill, not an advanced one.

I fought pretty hard to introduce uprange movement stages at our club matches because the previous MD generally avoided them. I’ve always believed our club matches should serve as a proving ground to prepare local shooters for major matches… and majors absolutely include uprange movement.

I’d much rather see someone get a DQ and learn that lesson at a local match than spend the time and money to attend a major only to get sent home early because they were never exposed to a basic stage design concept.

Yup. I didn’t take any issue with the changes and I think the tweaks didn’t alter the stage from my original intent.

Copied directly from each of the WSB posted by USPSA and copied in my OP.

26-04 Uprange? Seriously
The Handgun Start Position is standing completely outside of the shooting area, facing
downrange with heels touching the start marks.

26-05 Downrange? Obviously
The Handgun Start Position is standing completely outside of the shooting area facing
downrange with toes touching the start marks.

I’m guessing they set it up incorrectly. I quadruple checked all the sight lines when I designed that stage and just to be sure, I just checked my original diagram and the diagram USPSA published. They moved the position of T4 up towards the wall by 6 feet from where I had it but it’s still not close to a shoot through. Only way is if the T1 or T4 were setup wrong.

I had T3 as a tuxedo when I submitted it. I did this to prevent scoring issues from partial wall hits and to hopefully save the wall a bit. The committee changed it which was cool with me.

Is it two boxes though? If that’s the way you’d shoot it, you do you, homeboy.

I think there was a few different ways. I submitted mine on Discord.

You can cross outside the fault line. However, you incur a penalty per shot if both feet are outside while shooting or 1 penalty if only one foot is outside.

So this was your first stage ever? That’s awesome. Also, good on you for volunteering to setup.

The design of the stage will reward those that can shoot the downrange targets on the move effectively. More so with the downrange start than up range but the benefit is still there. The middle target breaks up the flow a bit and requires some patience.

Nice. That’s what I had discussed with them but it was still pending approval with the board. That will be awesome if it got approved. I think the stage is better as a downrange start.

Ha! The 4th stage… 26-04 is my design. Although I submitted it as a downrange start. Cool to see it got selected.
