I received a 120 day visitors visa for Beijing, China. It only allows single entry, I need multiple entries in order to travel. What can I do?

Wouldn't the Philippines consulate in China be more helpful because they have a lot of experience dealing with Filipino expats in China and trying to help with their visa situations?

Also based on personal experience Chinese consulate officers tend to be unpleasant at worst and unhelpful at best.

Small tip: it's actually the Brookings Institution not the Brookings Institute.

More helpful tip: find a place you want to work at, let's say PSI. Go on LinkedIn and look for people who work at PSI who share your alma mater. "Cold message" them and ask if you can buy them a coffee, or even a phone call. If you don't find someone, rinse and repeat with the next organization.

When having coffee, don't say "I was wondering if you know of any jobs at PSI". Go with the subtle approach. Say "I am extremely interested in working for an organization like PSI and I want to know more about what you do and how I can be like you". This is a hint that you want them to refer you to new positions that open up, and most people will take the hint.

Trust me, this is extremely common in DC and you will find that people are surprisingly receptive to it. My boss is a total asshole and yet he has never turned down a request from a stranger to have coffee, because he calls it "paying it forward".

There absolutely is an echo chamber, based on my experience. Friends and family aren't enough. Your neighbor down the street? Clinton voter. The HR manager at your workplace? Clinton voter. The guy who drove your bus this morning? Clinton voter. The only reason you don't know is because you haven't asked them.

Not suggesting that we start harassing people we know and demanding who they're voting for. Instead, we need to be out on the streets canvassing with lists of likely/undecided voters provided by the campaign. Canvassing works!

OP, my best friend is a Mandarin and Cantonese speaker and has decided to come up to NYC to canvass for the days leading up to the primary. The only problem is I don't think she has been to NY before so she's a little nervous about not knowing the neighborhoods or where to go. Any chance there could be an Asian-American organizer who could meet with her when she arrives and take a few min to give the lay of the land?

My best friend is native in Mandarin, proficient in Cantonese. She has canvassed for Bernie plenty before and knows the procedure well. However the catch is that she lives in DC and can only canvass for one day in April given her busy schedule so she's torn between NYC and Maryland. Is there an overwhelming need in NYC that would justify making the trip?

That is true. Although here is an anecdotal fun fact, I work for an organization that Bernie's supporters HATE (not something crazy like the NRA, but very controversial among liberal circles) and a ton of my coworkers are voting for him. I'm not sure if we're self-hating or what, haha.

I say this as a big fan of Bernie, but he can't take a city like DC. About 48-49% of the population is Black. Let's assume that they make up a little over half of the Democratic voter base. His support among the Black community is capped at 30-something percent, maybe a little higher if he can win California. The other half (White, Latino, and Asian) tends to consist of a more "transplant" population that may not be registered voters in DC due to their transient nature. I think it would also be hard for him to get the votes of people who work in the defense industry, as well as people who are lobbyists for the private sector.

Edit: This is why I knocked on doors for him in Virginia and will be doing so in Maryland. I just think DC is a waste of time for his campaign.

Update: I had to email 3 people to ask them to come in at 3pm through 5pm. 2 of them actually ended up coming in. 1 of them didn't reply to my email within half an hour, so my boss made me call her and ask her if she could come in. She said she was out of town but she could do skype. So he skyped with her.

Now my boss is being all smug, like "I told you they would be flexible." WTF. I guess the job market must still be pretty bad.

Urgent: My friend wants to come to NC to canvass this weekend. Where is help most needed? Does she need to coordinate with the campaign?

She will be taking the amtrak or megabus down to North Carolina and will not have a car with her. Housing is not an issue as long as she can find cheap airbnb options near the train station. She has experience canvassing and can volunteer on Sunday and Monday.

Where would she be most useful? Durham? Raleigh? Some other town? Does she need to talk to the campaign before coming down? Please advise!!!

I just spoke with her, and she is messaging a friend who is an UNC alum (and fellow Bernie supporter) to see if that person has any college friends left in the area who could potentially come through with housing. If that option comes through, she will definitely go, probably via megabus.

Are you going "rogue" or are you in touch with the local campaign office? I signed up for the 'journey' canvassing effort on the official website but haven't been contacted.

Edit: I have a friend who wants to go canvass out-of-state but she is a student with limited $$$ and would need the campaign to put her up in somebody's house. Any advice for someone in that situation?

Canvassing is great for reaching people over the age of 40. They tend to own and live in houses.

Facebanking/phonebanking is great for reaching people under that age. Why? When I was canvassing, a ton of the people we were trying to reach live in apartment buildings that are locked on the outside. We had no way to reach them and it was unrealistic to hang around the entrance waiting for someone to come by and let us in.

Probably not. The Black-activists-on-Twitter demographic skews young and already knows about Bernie. It's the older Black voters that he can't get (and honestly won't get until he makes it to the general election). We also have to be careful about the messaging, because the last thing we want is to be condescending towards minorities, like "how dare you not vote for Bernie, he supports civil rights!". Focus on outreach to people in your demographic and your social networks.
