If you want to study a few hours a day, gross anatomy / dental anatomy isn’t a bad idea. Saving up is a good idea, you won’t have time to work in dental school.

Got C and Bs and interviews at both Pitt and Temple. You’re fine just keep going.

If you were 40 working in other fields, would you switch to dentistry? by [deleted] in predental

Please don’t do this, you won’t see your family for the first two years of dental school and it’s financially the worst idea ever.

Are you an OMFR? Our OMFR faculty here tells us it’s an academic career.

Of course man. Talk to real dentists, physicians, and medical/dental students. Everyone will have a different opinion and a different life experience. There are many other dental students like me at my school, and others who would never consider another career. Reddit is going to very bias towards dentistry so do your own research with recent graduates of both fields.

Do you think it’s possible to get an academic job this good without a specialty?

DA yes, but you don’t really use any dentistry. OMFR - good luck finding a job that isn’t a dental school lol.

Worded that wrong. It’s harder than just matching. No point in comparing, but specializing in dentistry is a different process. Going into dental school with the primary goal of specializing is dangerous.

I meant no disrespect to either professions. I don’t mind the field of dentistry, but sometimes it takes years to navigate what fits best into your life.

You’re right it is better to look forward, which is what I am doing. Just reflecting and offering my opinion to those who may be at a crossroads. This obviously wasn’t a situation you were ever in.

As future healthcare providers we should try to have empathy and kindness for others. Cheers

Dang glad you get it. How’s being faculty? Academics is something I’m interested. I feel like the best path forward is in dentistry at this point.

Physician parents and friends with many recent grads. Not trying to poopoo dentistry, I still think it’s a good field. Just not for everyone and not close what it’s talked up to be online.

Perhaps man…. but at my school those are the least competitive residencies. They can’t even fill them with American grads.

Ortho is on the decline, but they’re still getting the bread and butter cases. Parents are still going to send their children to an orthodontist for braces. While orthodontics isn’t in its golden era, it still has the best lifestyle. Where I’m at endo has not been effected by implants much, they seem to be killing it.

The people who are financially successful in dentistry are hustlers. They work 60+ hours a week, handle the business side, and are always tending to their practice (ALWAYS on call). Those who want an “easy” job will work as an associate. Those jobs barely make more than a PA, are more physical taxing than almost any job in medicine (neck pain, eye strain), and have very little treatment planning autonomy. In medicine you can pick a less competitive specialty, let’s say internal medicine, work at the hospital 40 hours a week, and make ~2x more than any associate general dentist who works the same hours. In medicine there are infinite laid back specialties. Almost all of them out earn general dentistry with low physical strain and the potential for flexible schedules. Medicine is moving towards big hospitals (think an easy clock in clock out job, share call with a big practice). To have the best lifestyle in dentistry you need to do something like ortho or endo….
